This Wreck Wednesday, enjoy this great article from SDI about the do's and don'ts of wreck diving! A quick read with lots of useful information!

Thank you Emily for sharing with us the sign that asks how much air pressure a diver has left. When diving in groups, not all people consume air at the same rate and divers should be continually mindful of the air supply of their diving partners. To ask how much air a buddy has left, place 2 fingers on an open hand. It is also very important to understand how to reply, perhaps that should be next weeks post! Share with us a picture of you performing a dive sign! It can be underwater or a bathroom selfie! We're not picky, have a great Sunday everyone!

Who doesn't love a shark infested Friday! This FISH FRIDAY is dedicated to a breed of shark that is undoubtedly named after it's tiger-like stripes, the tiger shark. Tiger sharks can get up to 25 feet long, weigh an astounding 1900 lbs, and live 15 or more years. They are common in tropical and sub-tropical waters have a nearly limitless diet including turtles, snakes, rays, and have been found with tires and license plate in their belly. ... They are heavily harvested for their fins, skin, and flesh, and their livers contain high levels of vitamin A, which is processed into vitamin oil. They have extremely low repopulation rates, and therefore may be highly susceptible to fishing pressure. They are listed as near threatened throughout their range. We'd love to hear about an experience you've had with these beauties! Share below!!

Our second installment of DIVE SIGN SUNDAY is brought to you by our friend Brittany! She is pictured signaling "BOAT" by cupping her hands and holding them together. This sign is very important for many reasons. Your DM might signal that you and your buddy need to head to the boat, or perhaps there is an unknown boat nearby and you should be extra cautious. Comment a picture of your best boat signal!! Photo bomb by new DW rashgauards!

Known for it's fearsome appearance and ferocious behavior, today's FISH FRIDAY post is dedicated to the fish we have all heard of (thanks mainly to Heart) and want to avoid contact with... the BARRACUDA. Barracudas are muscular fish with streamlined, torpedo-shaped bodies. The lower jaw juts out past the upper jaw and both are filled with dozens of razor sharp teeth. Fun fact...some of the teeth of the great barracuda point backwards to prevent slippery fish from escaping on...ce they are seized. The best thing to do when diving in Barracuda waters, mainly tropical areas, is to remove anything shiny before diving. These fish hunt with sight and can mistake a piece of jewelry for a food source. Despite the dangers associated with them, they are very neat to see...from far away of course! Check out this video one of our divers took of a small Barracuda family in Cozumel last year!

Wreck Wednesday is here and we're changing up the discussion this week! If you're enjoying learning about these wrecks, perhaps there's a place for you as a wreck diver! Here's some information about what it takes to explore these sunken treasures. Upon completion of a basic certification course, divers are able to dive down to 60 feet. Most wrecks however lie beneath that depth so it's important to follow up with a NAUI ADVANCED COURSE that will prepare you for deeper, more... challenging dives. If you desire even more training beyond the advanced course, you can also take a NAUI WRECK DIVER or DEEP DIVER specialty course that will give you all of the tools necessary to explore the amazing wrecks in the underwater world. All of these courses are available through Diver's World. The Great Lakes have more shipwrecks per square mile than anywhere else, with more than 2000 in Lake Erie alone. Imagine all the cool things to see! Stop back next week to discover more about the shipwrecks of the Great Lakes!

Let's get your Friday a little fishier. Today we're talking a type of codfish that you can find right in Lake Erie, the Burbot. The burbot is a large, eel-shaped, mottled-patterened fish that likes to hang out on the bottom of the lake. Chances are some of our local wreck diver's have met a burbot or two on a dive. Burbot are considered the best tasting fish in Lake Erie and are often referred to as the "poor man's lobster". They are very soft and are somewhat difficult to c...atch which keeps them from being fished commercially. They won't be winning any beauty contests any time soon but are always neat to see! Have a great weekend divers!

Wreck Wednesday is upon us! We’re diving a day early into the Oxford, located in the depths of Lake Erie. The Oxford is a two masted brig that sank after a collision with a steamer cataract in 1856. She sits in 164 feet of water which makes it beyond the limits of sport diving as defined by all major certifying agencies. It should only be attempted by very experienced divers with specialized training for depths in excess of sport diving limits. The Oxford is 114 feet long a...nd is around 25 miles NNE of Erie. PA. Due in part to her depth, the ship is very well preserved. While there is damage at the starboard bow from the collision that sunk her, her two large anchors sit prominently on the bow. Moving to toward the stern, her windlass, bilge pumps, offset centerboard, and rigging winch are sitting in place, ready for use, as though she might one day sail again. Thanks to Jeremy Bannister once again for the incredible photos!

Enjoy this short blog we found with excellent information on where to "spot" our fish of the week, the WHALE SHARK! https://www.diveworldwide.com//5-of-the-best-places-to-see

Divers World 10.06.2020

The gentle WHALE SHARK is the topic of today's FISH FRIDAY segment! Whale sharks are the largest shark, and the largest of any fish alive today. They feed on plankton and travel large distances to find enough food to sustain their huge size, and to reproduce. Whale sharks are found in all the tropical oceans of the world. Their white spotted colouration makes these giants easy to distinguish, and popular with snorkelers and divers at sites where they aggregate off the coas...t. A cool fact...Like human fingerprints, whale sharks have a unique pattern of spots which allow individual sharks to be identified. By taking photos and cataloguing them, WWF has identified 458 different whale sharks in the Philippines. Have any of you ever been lucky enough to see one on a dive? Share with us your experience!

Divers World 27.05.2020

This week we're talking about one of the best dives on the planet, the famous S.S.Yongala shipwreck! On or about March 23, 1911, the luxury passenger steamship sank en route to Townsville during a cyclone. The ship disappeared with no survivors and its final resting place remained unknown for decades. It has since earned a reputation as the largest and most-intact wreck for scuba divers in Australian waters. Every inch is teeming with life, from the soft corals covering the ...hull and the swarms of teeny tropical fish to giant trevally and schools of barracuda. sea turtles, sharks, sea snakes, mantas and eagle rays are all common sights in this undersea mecca. In cooler months, you may even encounter humpback whales. This wreck sits between 52-98 feet and is protected under the Historic Shipwrecks Act of 1976, so penetration is forbidden. The Yongala wreck is considered an advanced dive due to strong currents and its remote location. If you'd like to hear an interesting story regarding this wreck, google "Honeymoon Killer Yongala"!

While we're all busy getting our turkey's (or tummies) prepped and ready for tomorrows feast, let's not forget about WRECK WEDNESDAY!!! Here we go friends. It's no secret that us scuba diver's love to travel and explore Our dive club has visited Cozumel, Mexico, and has ventured out to investigate the C53 Wreck of the Felipe Xicotencatl. In fact, our cover photo is our friend Lynn in front of this magnificent wreck! Measuring 184 feet long, 33 feet wide and 40 feet high... from keel to the top of the super structure, this ship was put into service as mine sweeper for the US Navy as SCUFFLES. In 1962 she was sold to the Mexican Navy, converted to an Admiral Class gun boat and named and numbered FELIPE XICOTANCATL C-53. From 1962 to 1999 she patrolled the Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican Caribbean sea serving in rescue missions and patrolling for illegal arms and drugs. After 55 years of service C-53 was decommissioned and later donated to Cozumel underwater park. C-53 was sunk in 1999 in 82' of water just off shore from Chankanaab Park! Lucky us! We'd love to hear about your experience on this wreck! Who's it?!

Today's fish of the day is the YELLOW TANG!!! The yellow tang has an oval bright yellow body. It is widespread throughout Hawaii to Indonesia and The Great Barrier Reef. Some of our local divers recently took a trip to St. Croix, and likely saw some yellow tangs! With their beak-like snouts and narrow faces, yellow tangs were built for eating algae out of crevices in coral and between rocks. Their daily routine is pretty much built around grazing and eating all day long. Th...ey're just living the dream! #fishfriday #yellowtang #scubadiving #marinelife #scubadiver #tropicalfish

Wednesday's mean wreck days!!! Today we're taking a look at the Howard Gerken, a sandsucker that spent time removing silt in the entrance to the harbor at Erie, Pa. It was steaming towards Buffalo when it was caught in a summer gale in 1926. The Gerken began taking on water and because the ship was very heavy, carrying wet mud, the steamer sank very quickly. The captain and 15 members of the crew were rescued but sadly 4 lives were lost. It now sits capsized in 79' of water. ...Divers located this wreck in 2009 and have been exploring it ever since. It can be easy to miss because the bottom of the ship blends well with the floor of the lake, but is a unique experience for sure. Share with us an experience you've had on the Gerken! Has anyone dove it as a training dive? Enjoy this awesome video by Jeremy Bannister! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7jBZivn9Uk&feature=youtu.be

Wreck Wednesday is here! Many members of our local dive community have seen this weeks featured wreck, the Dean Richmond, in person. The Dean is a propeller freighter of 238 ft sank 10/14/1893 in a terrific storm off Dunkirk, New York with its entire crew of 23. The Dean Richmond was last seen afloat badly damaged, without power and in the trough of the waves by another damaged steamer as it made for shore. For a century the Richmond was one of the most sought after lost ship...s of the lake. The vessel carried a valuable cargo of zinc ingots and assorted merchandise. The wreck was recently discovered by Garry Kozak after a nearly ten year search, inverted 5 miles off the Pennsylvania/New York border in 95 feet of water. It sits completely upside-down. If you've seen this wreck we'd love to see your pictures or hear about the experience! Is this one of your favorite wrecks in Lake Erie? Time for another Safety Saturday! This week we're on tip #10 and are discussing the importance of DIVE HAND SIGNALS A large part of being a safe diver is being able to communicate with your dive buddy or guide underwater. Whenever a situation occurs, maybe you are low on air or can't clear your ears, you have to be able to communicate that for your own safety as well as the safety of anyone you may be diving with. Let's work together to learn some dive signals! Snap a quick selfie using a dive signal, post and comment it's meaning! Doesn't even have to be underwater

Divers World 21.11.2019

It's finally Friday! Which means we're talking fish! We hope that by sharing information about marine life you are able to enjoy your dives a little more and can identify some of the fish you see! So today let's talk about the QUEEN PARROT FISH! The queen parrotfish is a medium sized parrotfish that lives on coral reefs in the Caribbean Sea and its adjacent waters. The parrotfishes are named for their powerful beaks, formed from the fusing of the teeth into biting plates. Th...e largest queen parrotfish are brightly colored (blue, green, orange, etc.), and the species gets its name from a series of markings on the head, above the eye, that resemble a crown. Juveniles and young adults are a somewhat drab, brownish color. Queen parrotfish are herbivores that graze the reef, using their beaks to scrape plants and algae from the reef surface. Through their feeding strategies, parrotfishes create much of the sand around a reef. Due to their constant grazing, queen parrotfish serve an important ecological function on coral reefs. By removing algae, they open up space on hard surfaces for corals to attach and grow. Fascinating!

It's Wreck Wednesday! This week we are spotlighting the deepest known wreck in Lake Erie...Sir CT Van Straubenzie. This wreck is located 7 miles southeast of Long Point Light and sits at a depth of 205'. It sank back in 1908 due to a collision, and sadly 3 people lost their lives. This dive is well beyond the limits of sport diving and should only be attempted by experienced divers with specialized training and equipment.
