Recently, I had someone say that they simply do not have enough retirement savings and insufficient cash flow to start. Unfortunately, retirement is not something that can wait. As of September 24th, the S&P 500 is up 6.3% month-to-date. This widely followed index has been volatile for most of 2010 and September's rise has continued this pattern. Mixed economic data has led to 2010's trading level. Long term investors making regular contributions have benefitted from the market swings. Staying with an investment plan is key to achieving long term goals, despite market volatility.

According to a recent study conducted by MetLife, more than half (52%) of employees believe they are behind in retirement savings. Furthermore, nearly an equal amount (53%) are very concerned about outliving their retirement savings.
