There were only five names left to be drawn for a late season cow tag for the ‘20/‘21 elk hunting seasons when Kevin George from Scranton Pa was called out. Kev...in drew a zone9 late season cow tag and is also the brother of ECO guide Ned George. To say that they were both excited would be an understatement and it only made sense that Ned would be Kevin’s guide for the hunt. Zone9 can be a challenging zone to hunt. It is geographically the smallest hunt unit with tags allocated and it is also 72% private property. The zone is comprised of mainly the Driftwood area and extends upriver a few miles along the route 555 corridor. Many places in Zone9 are not the most picturesque places to harvest an elk but it is necessary nonetheless. The elk that frequent the zone often cause human conflicts and vehicle collisions. Now don’t get us wrong that zone9 isn’t all doom and gloom, because it’s not, but it’s something that any tag holder for the zone should know and understand going into their hunt. ECO is very fortunate to have access to many different private properties in zone9 and have long term connections with many landowners there. In the late season cow hunt last year elk were hard to come by in the zone with only one of the two tags being filled, and that was an ECO client. This year however was not like that as elk were plentiful in the zone scattered all around leading up to the hunt. Also teamed up with Kevin and Ned was guide Donnie Lucas who’s father happens to own property in the zone and has a lot of connections in the area as well. Thursday and Friday before the hunt had many cow sightings across the zone including in several places where the guys had permission to hunt. Hopes were high for a shot opportunity early in the hunt. Saturday, day one, dawned with the cows gone from the area they had decided to start Kevin’s hunt out at. The guys relocated four times throughout the day checking several pieces of private property and also piece of public ground. They saw cows but they were on the wrong side of the property lines and not walking the right way. Day one ended with out a shot opportunity. A Sunday visit to an old friend of ECO renewed access to another piece of private property and as luck would have it Sunday evening a small group of cows were seen heading in that direction just before dark. The plan was for day two to start there and everyone agreed that the 6 of fresh new snow would quickly tell the guys if the elk were there or not. As daylight came on Monday morning day two, Kevin and Ned were sneaking along an old farm lane along the river and as they passed an old barn they spotted an elk out in front of them. The large cow was bedded under a pine tree and had just gotten up at the sight of the guys. Ned quickly dropped the shooting sticks and Kevin took aim. Ned confirmed it was a cow and called the shot to Kevin as the report of his 375 Ruger roared up and down the valley. You missed!!! hissed Ned as Kevin worked another round into the chamber. The cow was now trotting away and the guys had to quickly relocate around a few trees and brush to get another clear shot. Back on the sticks again, Kevin quickly sent two rounds downfield hitting the cow right behind the shoulder. She was down quickly and Kevin’s tag was filled. Afterwards we all ribbed Kevin over his miss and he said I can’t remember the last time I was that nervous...I was shaking so bad. If that was a big buck I would’ve been cool as a cucumber. Congratulations Kevin and Ned and thanks for letting the rest of us tag along!
