Chestnut Street Bridge update: Despite the appearance of completion, there is still work to be done on the bridge that prevents us from reopening it. First and ...foremost, the final layer of macadam has not been laid, and according to Allen Myers Co. that can not be done until we have a 4-5 day stretch of guaranteed favorable weather with consistent temperatures in the upper forties, minimum. We asked if we could open the bridge in the interim and were told absolutely not. There is also an issue with AMTRAK's dissatisfaction with the height of the barrier fence on the side of the bridge without the sidewalk. AMTRAK signed off on the fence when they approved the plans at the onset. As someone who used that bridge twice daily going to and from work, and whose commute home takes 10-15 longer without the use of the bridge, I really do share your pain of having the bridge out of service. Please just hang in there a little longer. It will be open by April 1 at the latest (no fooling) and we will all be glad to be looking at the saga of the Chestnut Street Bridge in our rearview mirrors. See more

The week of October 4 - 10, 2020 is Fire Prevention Week. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), along with the Downingtown Fire Dept. and other safe...ty advocates nationwide are urging people to check the batteries in your smoke detector, review your emergency escape plan with your family and stay fire smart. The national theme for 2020 is "SERVE UP FIRE SAFETY IN THE KITCHEN". Cooking continues to be a major contributor to the home fire problem, said Lorraine Carli, NFPA vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. The good news is that the vast majority of these fires are highly preventable. This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign works to better educate the public about where potential cooking hazards exist and basic but critical ways to prevent them. Carli notes that this year’s focus on cooking safety is particularly timely. As the public may continue to avoid restaurants for some time and opt instead to do more cooking and entertaining at home, the potential for home cooking fires will likely increase as well. Key messages around this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen will include the following: > Keep a close eye on what you’re cooking; never leave cooking unattended > Keep anything that can catch fire oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains at least three feet away from your stovetop. > Be on alert. If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol, don’t use the stove or stovetop.
