Beekeeping is very seasonal and Winter is the time of year to start planning for the next Beekeeping season. Info on 2021 training is in the attached flyers. In the Beekeeping 101 class we go over everything needed to set a beekeeper up for success in the first year of Beekeeping. We cover the basics of installing a first package or nucleus colony. We cover what to look for, and how often they should be visually inspected. We cover the PA and NY state law requirements, as well as, what resources are available for beekeepers in our area. We'll also cover more advanced topics like monitoring and treating for pests. We'll cover how best to set up colonies for overwintering success in Northern PA/Upstate New York. It's slightly more challenging, but there are also more honey rewards in this part of the country. Typical class composition is 50% new beekeepers and 50% current beekeepers. In the Beekeeping 201 class we go over everything needed in the 2nd year of beekeeping. Half of the day is spent covering all the methods, tools, and options for honey extraction. We recently added a hands on component where students will uncap frames of honey saved from the Fall, extract them, and then bottle fresh raw honey that they'll get to take home. The rest of the day covers more advanced topics such as splits, nucs, and queen rearing. We'll also spend time covering the 2nd year of Spring/Summer/Fall management, overwintering tips/tricks, and answering any beekeeping questions students may have.
