Today’s #SaturdayStories is inspired by the more than 2,500,000 U.S. Veterans that have been diagnosed with PTSD. One of our clinics in Soddy Daisy, TN wanted to find a way to make a difference so they orchestrated a fundraiser, Cents for Service Dogs, to raise $300 for Warrior Freedom Service Dogs, Inc. Warrior Freedom Service Dogs is a non-profit organization with the primary focus of providing an avenue for combat veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) to ...gain a Service Dog free of charge while reconnecting to the society they fought for. We are inspired by our associates every day that strive to make a difference in their communities and beyond. Pillars has matched the Soddy Daisy team’s fundraising effort with a grant that brings the donation total to $600 for the Warrior Freedom Service Dogs. #PillarsWithPurpose #UpstreamFamily

As the holidays approach, it’s easy to be tempted by cravings of sweets, baked goods and favorite comfort foods. Here are some helpful tips to get through the holidays without packing on the extra unwanted pounds: 1. Exercise 30 minutes each day. This will get your heart rate up, burn calories and relieve stress. 2. Eat as you normally would. Don’t skip meals!... 3. Don’t stuff yourself. Eat until you feel satisfied and full. 4. If you must snack, try nuts, vegetables and fruit. 5. Drink plenty of water. Consume 8 ounces prior to a big meal to make you feel full. 6. Make your own healthful dish for a gathering. 7. When socializing, don’t stand near the party table where the snacks are. 8. Cook healthy. For instance, use low-fat chicken broth instead of butter with mashed potatoes and choose light or fat-free salad dressings.

Is prehab right for you? Prehabilitation, or prehab is a compelling strategy to intervene on modifiable risk factors that influence post-operative outcomes for those facing cancer treatments. In fact, prehab before chemotherapy, surgery or radiation can improve fitness in as little as 2 weeks and can decrease the length of a hospital stay by 2 days. When taking part in a prehabilitation, supervised exercise program before mastectomy and/or breast reconstruction, you may reduce the risk of postoperative pain and other complications. Prehab can also improve both physical and mental health prior to undergoing cancer treatment.

We are grateful for our associates that strive to make a difference in their communities. Each week we will be featuring some of the ways that we are giving back in our #SaturdayStories. Harvesters - The Community Food Network and local Kansas City affiliate of Feeding America, provides food and related household products to more than 760 nonprofit agencies including emergency food pantries, community kitchens, homeless shelters, children’s homes and others. They also offer ...education programs to increase community awareness of hunger and teach about good nutrition. Through Harvesters Stamp Out Hunger campaign, our associate Ms. DeeDee Naumann and her daughter, provided 50 volunteer hours preparing 7000 plastic grocery bags and envelopes to aid in a food drive for Harvesters. To support her volunteer efforts Pillars sent relief to Harvesters in the form of a grant in the amount of $2,500 to help stamp out hunger, which falls in line with our overall efforts this year to fight for food security for families and neighbors in our communities. #PillarsDailyBread
