This weekend's farm project: Operation Propagation (aka "prop") House. . . Going into our 4th season on the farm we are still setting up the core infrastructure to make our small operation more efficient. Last year especially we realized we were lacking the main thing needed to get a jump start on the season during the frigid PA winters: heated greenhouses. .... . Each year we learn something new, spend a little more money to set things up right, and gain a little more farmer wisdom. . . I forget which farmer shared this analogy: A pianist has the opportunity to practice a song many times a day to perfect it. Whereas a farmer has one succession of potatoes in addition to many variables like temperature, rain, and soil health per season for maybe 30 years to learn and practice the art and science of farming potatoes (not to mention lettuce, tomatoes, peppers...). So 30x the lessons vs 1,000s of lessons for a pianist in their lifetime. . . Who has the easier job of perfecting their profession? . . As a farmer you are constantly adapting to your environment, there is no such thing as a perfect plan when it comes to Mother Nature. Winter projects on the farmstead include planning the crop calendar, ordering seeds, taking advantage of warmer days to do small projects outside like the tractor road, building new seedling tables for the prop house and more. Merry Christmas from our family to yours!

Wrapping up the member pickup season this weekend! We want to truly thank everyone that came out to the farm to pick up fresh food. We don't do this to become millionaires, we grow food because we like to know where our food comes from and teach our children the work and fun that goeswith it. Also growing food for others is so fulfillingknowing everyone is getting great healthyveggies and that people really do care about how their food is grown or raised. . . We are going ...to be doing big things late this fall to help with much needed consistencyon the farm. We are going to be expanding the growing area and putting up a permanentfence to keep out the critters that just seem to be still making it throughthe electric netting. Putting in swales to divertwater from the hill abovethe field to prevent any washout on those super crazy rain storms that seem to pop up at leastonce a year. We will also be setting up a much bigger strawberry patch, blueberries, planting our own fruit trees and much much more. . . Until next year!
