Welcome Week is coming to a close and next week returning students will join our incoming first year students in kicking off the Fall quarter. We're excited to get started with our newest Materials dragoneers, like Avi Wolnek from Philadelphia, who says "I am looking forward to the research opportunities at Drexel. I am especially interested in working with composites like the plane behind me." We can't wait to see what Avi and the rest of this new class accomplish!
We love to see students who participate in our high school programs join us again as dragoneers! One of these is incoming first year student Leiny Ruggerio who says, I am from Charles Town, WV, but I went to high school in MD. The reason I decided to go into MSE all started at a very young age with a fascination for engineering and the hopes of someday working for NASA. My want to become an engineer became ever clearer when I was declared a club leader in my high school’s M...akers Club/ FAB-LAB. I then later became the team captain in a group competition to create a grow box that would be able to operate on the ISS, which we won top five in the US. My path for discovering MSE came through a love of chemistry. Since deciding MSE sounded like a great choice, I participated in the MSE Summer Institute at Drexel which solidified my choice even further. I am super excited to start at Drexel and I look forward to making friends and discovering research opportunities. See more
Prof. Steve May assembling kits to mail out for students in MATE 355 (Structure and Characterization of Crystalline Materials) to learn about symmetry operators. We think pipe cleaners, skewers, and marshmallows are the best way to learn about screw axes.
Say hello to Maddie Graybill, another of our incoming first year Drexel Materials dragoneers! Maddie is from Raleigh, NC, and found out about Materials Science & Engineering from an NC State summer camp. She enjoys building and theatre. Welcome to the program, Maddie!
During Welcome Week, we're getting to know our incoming first year students, like Ed Guerra who lives in South Jersey. Ed says, "I'm more nervous than anything about becoming a student at Drexel because of the new responsibilities and environment, but I am looking forward to being able to go to Philly sports games once that's allowed again. I don't really have a specific hobby, but I like teaching myself new things, like how to do a backflip or how to play guitar (bonus points if I'm good at something right away). I can say for sure that I will want to swim at Drexel, and I'll probably want to rush a frat as well. I'm looking forward to seeing you all!" Us too, Ed!
Another of our incoming materials dragoneers is Zikria Saif from Islamabad, Pakistan. Zikria says "I’ve had a passion for engineering and design from the very start. As a kid, I loved coming up with new ideas and solutions. My choice of studying Material Science and Engineering emerges from the idea how much we can do with materials and how excited they make me when I look at the lens of possibilities of work from them. Being a CAIE Distinction holder (IGCSE Design and Techno...logy) top in Pakistan (First Position), I really developed a love for materials and their workable properties which forced me to learn more and more and study material science. I look forward to meeting one of the world’s best faculty members at Drexel Materials and more over the exciting Co-op experience is something I can’t wait to get started with. Not to mention the extraordinary resources at Drexel for research is something for which I cannot wait! Go Dragons!" See more
It's Welcome Week for our incoming first year students! We're so excited to get to know our newest materials dragoneers this week, like Dan Parsons, who comes to Drexel from Rumson-Fair Haven RHS in central Jersey. Dan says Growing up I was always pretty interested in science (my dad is a chem engineer) and since I began high school, I basically knew I would want to do something similar. This past year I was lucky enough to be able to take AP chemistry, and I reinvigorated m...y interest in the subject. While this led to my initial program being just straight chemistry, I later heard about and eventually switched into the MSE program (lines up more with the sort of goals I have in a career, and seemed more geared towards the type of chemistry I enjoy). I’m incredibly excited to start learning at Drexel... I look forward to talking more and meeting in the future! See more
Congratulations to Drexel Materials rising senior Mark Petrovic, recipient of two prominent scholarships, the 2020 Tau Beta Pi Scholarship and an ASM Materials Education Foundation Outstanding Scholar Award! Summer is a great time to start scholarship applications for the 2020-21 academic year. Students should visit the Resources for Current Students section of our webpage and reach out to Leslie Campion for more information. https://drexel.edu//arc/2020/August/petrovic-scholarships/
Drexel Materials Teaching Professor Christopher Weyant uses several active learning approaches shown to improve student outcomes in his classes, including flipped classroom, problem-based learning, problem solving studio and student response systems.
