Breathing Tubes Fail to Save Many Older Patients- article in The New York Times June 26, 2018 - Bottom line is we may be hurting more older adults by intubating them(ie inserting a tube into the trachea and connecting the person to a mechanical ventilator) than using more noninvasive ventilation ( ie placing a mask over the mouth and nose and blowing air into the lungs to assist with breathing). "Analyzing 35,000 intubations of adults over age 65, data gathered from 262 hospitals between 2008 and 2015, Dr Ouchi and his colleagues found that a third of those patients die in the hospital despite intubation(also called mechanical ventilation."
