This week of DUSHPE Spotlight series features Mexican-American physicist, Albert Baez! (Also known as the father of singer Joan Báez) Born in Publea, Mexico in 1912, Báez moved to the US at the age of 2 and lived there for the rest of his life. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Drew University in 1933 and a masters’ degree from Syracuse University in 1935. In 1950 he earned his physics doctorate at Stanford University, where he and Dr. Paul Kirkpatrick invented the x-ray ref...lecting microscope, the tool that launched the field of x-ray optics. From 1961 to 1967, Báez was the first head of the division of science teaching at UNESCO in Paris, where he helped develop projects in the basic sciences in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Arab states.
