Philly Roller Derby and East Coast Derby Extravaganza mourn the loss of Bettie Mercury. Beloved across the derby community, Bettie has long been a vital part of... our sport and league, and a friend and mentor to many. Bettie and her husband, Ian Fluenza have helped PRD as officials and event organizers, and she has been present at every ECDX. We extend our deepest condolences to Ian and all of Bettie’s friends and family at this time.

Systemic racism is a problem in roller derby. As an international community that strives to be an inclusive space, it is paramount that we take steps to ensure that the rules apply equally to all skaters. At ECDX last week, we fell short of this goal. On multiple occasions, skaters of color were called out on penalties by their skin color and number, given penalties committed by other skaters of the same race, and confused by the announcers with other minority skaters. These ...mistakes were not made in an attempt to cause harm, but these subconscious errors reveal a harmful systemic problem that we need to consciously address. It is not the responsibility of minority skaters to create an accepting environment and call out these aggressions, so we are taking this opportunity to highlight this issue. WFTDA has made a statement including initial steps forward. In addition to those actions, Philly Roller Derby is providing its explicit support for skaters of color while listening to feedback and exploring ways to mitigate the effects of systemic racism in our community and at our future events. https://wftda.com/executive-statement-and-action-items-fr/
