On 3/8/21, the Macungie Police Department responded to two (2) vehicle thefts. Both were Ford F250 pick up trucks from the mid 2000 era. One truck was recovered... shortly after the initial report was received. The recovered vehicle was missing a catalytic converter. The second truck has not been located. MPD learned that nearby jurisdictions also had thefts of catalytic converters from trucks of the same era. Please report any suspicious activity to MPD immediately. If you own a mid 2000 era Ford F250 you may want to garage your vehicle, if possible, or park in well lit areas overnight.

During a routine test yesterday, I tested positive for COVID-19. I have no symptoms and am feeling well and I am in isolation at home. I am following CDC and De...partment of Health guidelines. Frances has been tested and, as we await the result, is quarantining at home with me. I am continuing to serve the commonwealth and performing all of my duties remotely, as many are doing during the pandemic. As this virus rages, my positive test is a reminder that no one is immune from COVID. Following all precautions as I have done is not a guarantee, but it is what we know to be vital to stopping the spread of the disease. I ask all Pennsylvanians to wear a mask, stay home as much as possible, socially distance yourself from those not in your household, and, most of all, take care of each other and stay safe.

The Macungie Police Department is saddened and heavy hearted to report retired K9 Sammy has been laid to rest on Friday, October 23, 2020. Sammy came to the d...epartment in 2008 and and officially retired in 2014. During his tenure with the department he had numerous drug seizures and fugitive captures. The most notable was during his first year when he played a key role in the arrest of a suspect with over 400 bags of crack cocaine, 30 bags of heroin and a gun in his vehicle. Sammy spent his retirement with handler Corporal Mullen and his family. It was rumored that the big bad tough police dog often cowered to smaller dogs in the home. Sammy was always ready to work or greet children who stopped by headquarters to visit. Corporal Mullen expressed his sincere thank you to all the residents and businesses who showed support and helped fund program during the start up of the K9 program. Without that support we would have never been fortunate to meet and work with such an outstanding K9. We've added a few photos and action shots for those who have not met Sammy. Sammy, you will be missed and you will never be forgotten. Rest comfortably and continue to keep watch over us.

*Update- Rite Aid Fogelsville Incident* On October 20th, the UMTPD received inquiries in regards to the validity of a viral Facebook post about an incident that... occurred at Rite Aid in Fogelsville involving an unknown subject sticking lottery tickets underneath a tire of a car in the parking lot of the business. According to the post, when the female complainant bent over to take a closer look at the tickets, she advised that she believed she saw a man walking quickly towards her, so she quickly got into her vehicle and left the area. The UMTPD has confirmed the validity of this story, as well as another incident (at this same location) involving similar circumstances. Both incidents occurred during daylight hours and both involved female complainants. In the second incident, the female complainant advised that she observed lottery tickets near her car, but did not observe anyone walking towards her. She then entered her car and drove away. Neither incident involved an attack/assault on an individual. As a result of these two reports, UMTPD officers will immediately increase patrols in commercial parking lots in the area, and the UMTPD Crime Division has begun an investigation. Our intent in sharing this information is not to cause fear, rather, we hope to educate the general public and ensure that people stay safe when shopping in commercial areas. Remember: 1) Always be aware of your surroundings. Take a moment before you exit your vehicle to scan the area for suspicious situations or people. You should do the same when exiting a store. 2) Put your cell phone away and remove ear buds or headphones while walking through a parking lot. These distractions make you an easier target. 3) If possible, park as close to the store as possible. 4) If the situation becomes unsafe, immediately re-enter your car and lock the doors (or go back into the store immediately). Call 610-437-5252 (non-emergency) or 911 (emergency) as soon as possible and request that an officer come to assist you to make sure the situation is safe. Our officers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide service and keep you safe. Please don't ever hesitate to call us if help is needed. It’s our job. Lt. Peter Nickischer, UMTPD Crime and Community Services Division Commander [email protected]

Carry in - Carry out Lower Macungie currently has over 1200 acres of township parks and open space. Often the parks’ trash containers are overburdened with hous...ehold trash, items that can be recycled and with dog waste. Carry In Carry Out programs established in many national, state and local parks have enhanced the beauty of recreation areas and reduced the costs for park clean-ups. This Carry in - Carry out approach by visitors is appreciated. Especially in these current times when we’re all trying to keep each other safe, please, when you visit parks we request that you take your garbage, recyclables and dog waste home with you. Why??? Home away from home: The parks belong to all of us, and just like home, we need to care for them and keep them clean. Less mess: Removal of the garbage and recycling containers eliminates the smells and mess they create. It also cuts down on insects, skunks, and other pests. Reduce, reuse, recycle: Pennsylvania state law requires us to recycle many materials we used to throw away. Better yet, we can make new choices of what to bring with us. The more reusable things we pack, the less garbage we'll create. It's good for us and for our environment. Cost savings: Money that otherwise would be used for garbage disposal can be directed to providing you a better park experience. Thanks for helping out by carrying out what you've carried in to our parks!
