Wood mining car sprag with tapered ends is one of the many mining artifacts on display at Eckley Miners' Village. A sprag was used by mine employees to stop and hold in place coal cars by wedging the wooden sprag between the spokes of the car wheels.

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Today we are going to showcase recent artifact donations to Eckley Miner's Village; two scrapbooks compiled by movie buff Lois Witmer, which relate to the Paramount Pictures film "The Molly Maguires". Filmed at Eckley, PA in 1968 the movie attracted much attention to the village. The movie is about a secret Irish organization that was allegedly responsible for violence in the Anthracite Region during the 1860s and 1870s. Eckley was selected by Param...ount as a filming location due to its unchanged appearance. During the filming the village became a local tourist attraction and also provided supplemental employment to area locals as stage hands and extras in the movie. Many people traveled to the village to see the Hollywood stars, Sean Connery, Richard Harris and Samantha Eggar, who played the lead roles in the movie. Eckley was selected by Paramount due to its untouched nature; it was still a company owned patchtown. The movie was a significant part of the history of Eckley, raising awareness about the site that eventually led to its acquisition and preservation by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. An image of Samantha Eggar is on the front cover of the first scrapbook while a promotional scene from the movie is on the second scrapbook. 2018 marked the 50th anniversary of the filming of "The Molly Maguires" at Eckley, PA. The items in the scrapbooks were collected by Lois Ann Witmer who traveled to Eckley in 1968 to see the filming of the movie.
