Edgewood Historical Society 03.05.2021

Edgewood councilman and Historical Society member John "Jack" Bright has passed away. Visitation is today, with his funeral service planned Tuesday. Jack was such a kind man, running his bookstore on Edgewood Avenue, making the rounds seeking petition signatures and spending hours each Community Day making sure kids were smiling and having fun at the games booth at Koenig Field. He will be missed much and remembered fondly. RIP, Jack... https://niedfuneralhome.com//1223/John-Bright/obituary.html

100 years ago tonight, a crowd gathered at the Edgewood Club to listen to a radio broadcast of the presidential race between Warren G. Harding and James M. Cox. It was the first time the world ever heard such a broadcast. It also was the beginning of what would become the world-famous KDKA Radio. Here are a couple of articles about KDKA Radio and the monumental achievement of a century in broadcasting, and going strong! Also included are photos of a plaque hanging inside the ...Edgewood Club. https://triblive.com//kdkas-century-of-radio-is-filled-wi/ https://www.post-gazette.com//The-nig/stories/202011010029

We would like to thank the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf for hosting the Historical Society this week. What a wonderful evening discovering so much about your rich history -- 150 years in the making. The discovery of the time capsule and the treasures it held was special treat, as was absolutely everything about the evening. A special thank you to Aaron and Marybeth and everyone at this special place in the heart of our community.

Just a reminder that we will have our meeting from 6:30-8 p.m. Tues., Sept. 17, at the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. The school this year is marking its 150th anniversary, and they have been kind enough to invite us for a discussion of their history and a tour of the school, including its museum. WPSD is located at 300 E. Swissvale Ave. I hope to have more information about parking, etc., to pass along before the meeting. ... If you plan to attend, please send a message to [email protected] with your first and last name, I'd like to give them as much of a guest list as we can.

We have an exciting announcement about our next meeting, which will be from 6:30-8 p.m. on Tues., Sept, 17. The Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year -- and they've invited us to their campus (300 East Swissvale Avenue) for a discussion of their history, a tour and a visit to their on-site museum. This is a special opportunity and we hope you can join us. The event is free and open to everyone. Historical tidbit: The original main building on campus (built in Edgewood in 1884) burned down in 1899 and was replaced by what is there now.
