HAPPY SAINT PATRICK'S DAY!! Here are some interesting facts about the importance of St. Patrick and why people celebrate the way that they do today!
We hope you are all enjoying the beautiful weather! Did you know that on the second Sunday of March, people who live in the United States change their clocks backward an hour for daylight savings time? With the first day of spring right around the corner, we wanted to talk about why this practice started! "The idea of daylight savings time was first suggested in an essay by Benjamin Franklin in 1784 [...] however, it did not become a standard practice in the United States un...til 1966. Daylight Saving Time was originally instituted in the United States during World War I and World War II in order to [have] longer daylight hours and save energy for the war production. In the years after World War II, individual states and communities decided whether they wanted to continue observing Daylight Saving Time and when to do so. This meant some cities were an hour behind others even though they were only separated by a few miles on a map. In order to minimize the confusion, Congress passed the Uniform Time Act in 1966, which standardized the length of Daylight Saving Time for the country. Daylight Saving Time is most helpful to those who live farther from the equator, where daylight hours are much longer in the summer than in the winter. In locations closer to the equator, daylight hours and nighttime hours are nearly the same in length throughout the year. That's why many equatorial cities and countries do not participate in Daylight Saving Time. In the United States, there are only a few places that do not observe Daylight Saving Time, including parts of Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands."
Women’s HERstory Month!! Let’s take a look at some of history’s most influential women Malala Yousafzai defied the Taliban in Pakistan and demanded that girls be allowed to receive an education. She was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in 2012 but survived. In 2014, she became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Rosa Parks - After refusing to give up her bus seat to a white person in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks' courageous act in 1955 sparked a turn...ing point in the civil rights movement. Helen Keller - American author, political activist and lecturer, Helen Keller, was the first deaf and blind person to earn a college degree - proving that the only obstacle in achieving one's dream is yourself. Harriet Tubman - You can't mention the Underground Railroad without mentioning Harriet Tubman. The American hero, born into slavery, helped over 70 enslaved people achieve a life of freedom. . . . #womenshistorymonth #womenempowerment #grlpwr
Have you ever wondered why February was chosen to be Black History Month? Here is why! "February is the birth month of two figures who loom large in the Black past: U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (born February 12), who issued the Emancipation Proclamation, and African American abolitionist, author, and public speaker, Frederick Douglass (born February 14)." The first form of black history recognition came in the form of a week long celebration. This week long celebration was... then turned into month-long celebration when it gained national recognition in 1976. https://blog.frontrange.edu//five-fascinating-facts-about/ #blackhistorymonth

GEO STAFF INTRO Linda Kightlinger is the director of the GEO and has been welcoming international students to Edinboro for more than 20 years! Here is what she has to say about her job: "I have the best job on the "globe!" I get to welcome wonderful students from all around the world to study here at Edinboro. I learn from them and I watch them grow, graduate, be successful and so much more! Plus, I get to travel the globe with domestic students and watch them grow as they ...experience another country and culture.I have traveled to 11 countries and chaperoned in 6 EU faculty led programs. It is so rewarding to know that I have a part in helping students become open-minded, global citizens!" Here are some photos from Linda's favorite memories and experiences:
