You may recognize the name as a traditional shrub used in our area, but did you know it is also a tree? This week Kevin tells about this early summer flowering tree that also has an interesting bark that is particularly noticeable this time of year.

In winter when your pond freezes over and your fish are slumbering, invite your feathered friends to keep your pond alive! When prepping for the winter be sure to put feeders by your pond. While many birds have flown for the season, many others will still come by your water feature to feed and bathe. It’s important to not only know what species will be in your landscape but also to understand their diet and where to place your feeders. If you don’t close your pond for th...e winter, place your feeders near streams where open water still flows. This will allow them to wet their whistle and have a bite to eat at the same time. Cardinals, titmice, Jays, sparrows, chickadees, and finches are some of the birds that will visit in the winter. During the winter, fruit and insects are scarce for most birds so they rely on seeds as a natural source of food. Dried mealworm is great to fill the feeders with because of the natural stock depletion. Ideal seed for winter are high in fat or oil because it provides our birds with energy to survive through the season. Ideal winter food -dried mealworm -suet -fruit -peanut butter -White miller seed -Black oil sunflower seed -hulled peanuts -Nyger seed Try this in the winter and you never know. You just might spot a variety of bird that you’ve never seen in your yard before!!

Five reasons you should consider pruning your trees and shrubs this winter. 1) Fungus and insect control some serious plant problems such as fireblight and oak wilt can be spread if susceptible plants are pruned during the growing season. 2) Take control- the winter is a great time to prune overgrown and out of control plants, because to do it right you will need to take out some major branches leaving areas with no leaves. Why not do this in the winter when all the leaves ...are gone. 3) Spring vigor pruning in the winter will allow for all of the plants stored energy to be pumped into the remaining stems allowing the plant to leaf out and better recover from a rejuvenation pruning. 4) Better results we can see the branching structure and form of the plant much better when the leaves are off of the tree or shrub. This will help us make better cut selections. 5) Stop the bleeding -pruning when cold reduces the oozing of sap from fresh cuts. Loss of sap from the tree results in a reduction of vital energy It is important to note that there are several reasons not to prune some plants in the winter. For example, some plants may have dramatically reduced flowering if pruned in the winter! Please contact Eichenlaub if you have any questions on this. [email protected]
