Virtual Interview Tips and Tricks- As we proceed with ERAS applications during these unprecedented times, applicants are forced to adapt in a virtual interview season. Below, are some helpful tips and tricks for your video interview. 1. Location... a. The spot that you choose to have your interview is very important. Please ensure that your location is i. Quiet 1. Limit ambient noise as much as possible a. Consider where you are in terms of traffic, neighbors, etc. ii. Professional background clean, free of distractions 1. If you are using a background, please make sure it is business professional. 2. Avoid having people, pets, etc. potentially interfering with your interview iii. Stable internet connection and cellular service 2. Contingency plans a. If you’re having Zoom technical difficulties, make sure you have the interview administrator’s contact information. Have their number and email address ready. b. Make sure your device is fully charged i. Ideally, your interview should be done on a computer with webcam/microphone or a laptop. 1. Is your computer or laptop compatible with Zoom? This is the time to check. 2. If possible, have a spare device ready. 3. Punctuality a. Sign into the meeting 5-10 minutes early if possible. 4. Video a. Test your video quality a few days prior to your interview. i. How’s the quality? Is it sharp or dull? Lagging? Is natural and/or artificial lighting ruining your video quality? Address these issues ahead of time. ii. Consider buying a selfie ring light if the shadows are overwhelming 5. Audio a. Test your audio quality a few days prior to your interview also i. Are you using a microphone or headphones? 1. Check the audio quality for both. Which one sounds better? Is it tinny? Static? Work out the kinks ahead of time. 6. Physical appearance a. Although interviews are virtual now, you still have to look the part. i. Dress professionally, from head to toe. ii. Be well groomed. iii. Check your lighting again. 7. Interview Etiquette a. Have your phone on silent mode. Do not be on your phone during the interview. Have the phone next to you or in your pocket. b. Standard interview rules apply i. Be prepared to answer any and all questions that are on your CV, personal statement, etc. if it’s on ERAS, it’s fair game. ii. Be prepared to ask questions about the residency program. What do you want to know about the program? c. Send thank you emails to the coordinator(s), interviewer(s), and program director(s). See more
