If you wonder why in the world we closed Emma's Friends, it was to further support Emma herself. What we didn't know about her diagnosis of Cortical Visual Impairment until a short while ago is that it can be IMPROVED. We found the work of this woman, Dr. Christine Roman-Lantzy, and Emma's world began to open up when we learned how to help Emma make sense of the world around her. CVI impacts approximately 40% of children with visual impairments in first world countries, ye...t it is still undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, misunderstood and under-treated. Emma is finally learning to read. At 16. She can see US. She can feed herself and is working on all sorts of activities of daily living (ADLs) which had been unattainable before. Yet, century old organizations which serve the "ocularly blind" [CVI is a brain injury blindess, which is why it can be improved unlike ocular visual impairments] are refusing to address the needs of our children and block the training that is needed for teachers and therapists to treat them. Some of which are federally funded to support students with visual impairments. As parents of children with CVI, we can no longer stand by and let these organizations come out against what we have witnessed to be effective. I know the families and children of the faces you see below. I have eaten dinners with them, cheered them on, commiserated with them and they I. These beautiful faces represent only 4 of the thousands of children who are missing out on an appropriate education and quality of life they could have with proper, strategic, purposeful, frequent interventions.
