Sharing another recent acquisition from the Iobst family. Pictured is the Junior Choir of Emmaus Moravian Church circa 1959-1960. How many of you recognize yourselves, your friends or your siblings? It was quite a large choir! #emmaushistory #preserve #supportlocal #emmaushistoricalsociety

Today we are featuring a recent donation from the Iobst family of Emmaus. It is a photo taken of the chancel at the Emmaus Moravian Church at Easter time in the 1920s. Quite a different appearance from what it looks like today! Wishing all who celebrate a very happy Easter! #emmaushistory #preserve #supportlocal #emmaushistoricalsociety

Last Thursday, we posted a picture of the Colonial Manor Gift Shoppe sign, mentioning Miriam Barto, its owner, as a pioneer of the time, a woman jumping into business as a sole proprietor in 1963! Featured today are two photos of Mrs. Barto. The first one is taken inside the shop with Katie Lutsey, who worked next door at Rodale. This photo was taken for Prevention magazine. The second photo features Mrs. Barto with two of her employees, Wendy Amig and Scott Polster. #emmaushistory #preserve #supportlocal #emmaushistoricalsociety

Sharing some additional Christmas postcard greetings from the Emmaus Historical Society’s collection. Merry Christmas Eve to all!

Emmaus Historical Society 28.12.2020

Did you know that in the early 1900s, postcards were the way people would send greetings and even collected them in albums? Prior to forming the Hallmark Company, Joyce and Rollie Hall formed the Hall Brothers company in 1910 which started by selling postcards as well. The Emmaus Historical Society is fortunate to have two postcard collections dating from 1907 to 1911. These were all printed in Germany. Here is one of the albums and a couple of Christmas postcards.

Did you know there was a second Eagle Hotel in Emmaus after the first one on the Triangle was torn down? This sign was hanging at the Eagle Hotel on the Triangle in 1916 when John Gaal purchased the hotel with his partner, Joseph W. Muhr. Joseph Muhr later went into the automobile business on the Triangle and then operated the Central Hotel. When the Eagle Hotel on the Triangle was torn down in 1923, John Gaal purchased the newly built Eagle Hotel at 6th and Jubilee Streets which he operated until he retired in 1960. #emmaushistory #preserve #shoplocal #emmaushistoricalsociety

Did you know that there once was a hotel on the Triangle in Emmaus? Featured is a painting by Myles Feather of the Eagle Hotel, built in 1850 and razed in 1923 when the Triangle was purchased by Dr. M. J. Backenstoe. At that time, it was noted in the land title that nothing could ever be built there again and it had to be preserved in a park-like setting. The doctor later donated the parcel to the borough of Emaus and the Triangle was rededicated in 1924.

We had a great time last night at the Emmaus Historical Society singing Christmas music!

Emmaus Historical Society 23.11.2020

The Emmaus Historical Society will be continuing our annual tradition of Christmas caroling on Friday, December 4 from 6:30 - 7:00 pm. The Quarantettes will be back to perform for us outside on the front porch. While the museum remains closed, our beautiful home is festively decorated once again. Join us as we usher in the season! (Please remember to social distance and wear a mask.)

Emmaus Historical Society 22.11.2020

Thank you to everyone who joined us last night to watch the Quarantettes perform on our front porch - it sounded like angels on Main Street! Special thanks to Historical Society president, Jeanne Harakal for organizing this beautiful performance.

Over the years, Emmaus/Emaus has recognized its incorporation of 1859 with various celebrations. Pictured is the booklet from the Diamond Jubilee when Emaus celebrated its 75th anniversary of incorporation. So much was happening in the Borough in 1934! #emmaushistory #supportlocal #preserve #emmaushistoricalsociety

#tbt to the way to play music 100 years ago! How many of you have ever heard a 78 record played on a Victrola manufactured by the Victor Talking Machine Co. in Camden, N.J. This one is a prominent feature in the museum and still works! You just have to crank it up! It was donated to the Society by Past President Bill Barto. #emmaushistoricalsociety #supportlocal #preserve
