Another teacher's hiatus from pumping my adaptive climbing shit. So everybody knows what a googol (Google is a copyrighted name that sounds the same) is right?:... A googol is 1 followed by 100 zeros or 10 to the power of 100. This number was created by mathematicians and physicists to represent a number larger than anything countable,: specifically larger than the number of subatomic particles of matter in the known universe. If I take the 100+billion galaxies x 200+billion avg. stars per x alot of particles per avg. solar system, I get like 10 to the power of 88. If I divide by 0.1 to account for dark matter, not seen, and divide by 0.1 again by dark energy, not understood, I still get only 90 zeros. That means I am still only one-ten billionth of a googol. So its true. Then, for pure folly, they named "googol-plex" or a googol to the googol power; whaaat? This would be 1 followed by 100 googol zeros. True by following the algorithm: 100 to the power of 100 has 2-hundred zeros; 1000 to the 1000th has 3-thousand zeros; 1,000,000 to the 1,000,000th has 6-million zeros. So a "googol-plex" has a trillion times more zeros than there are particles in the Universe. Ouch, my head ruptured again. Infinity? Fourth and higher dimensions hidden in the small? Popped again.

So I do not have insomnia, but I do lay in bed in the early am doing thought experiments that include some 5-digit arithmetic, shown below. It lets me know how... my monkey brain is doing or not doing. Today, I started with defining the acuteness of Newton’s Parallax triangle Michael Giblin & Daniel Lindsey as he determined the distance to the Moon using to co-longitudinal points on Earth. But, then I realized I did not know the Inverse Tangent of 4,000(opp)/240,000(adj) or InvTan (0.01667) in my head in arcminutes and I am not allowed to cheat with Iphone calculator. I do know that his two observers had to have a damn good sextants. This dream-flowed naturally to the basic premise of the Michelson-Morley experiment (1887) which allowed for the inadvertent determination that the speed-of-light, c, is constant for all observers. Precociously, this lead to Einstein's Special Relativity, time dilation and the associated Lorentz transformation formulas. M & M were trying to determine the speed of the Earth through space, or The Aether, using light’s speed. In the same way that a speeding rowboat (light) can move across and back on flat water (stationary Space) or against a moving current up & with the current back to a fixed spot (relative speed of Earth in Space as it revolves around stuff). One would find that it takes slightly longer for the latter scenario depending on the relative speeds of the boat and the current. For example, if the boat goes 4mph for 1 mile across and back with no current, it would take 15 min. x 2 or 30 minutes total. Against a 2mph (2:1 boat to current speed ratio) current it would take 30 minutes just to go up and 10 more minutes back or 40 minutes total. Ratio of time difference is 40/30=1.33 times longer up & back. Got it? If the boat goes 60 mph for 1 mile across and then back with no current, it would take 1 min. x 2 or 2 minutes total. Against a 6 mph (10:1 speed ratio) current it would take 10/9=1.111 minutes up and 10/11=0.909 minutes back or 2.02 minutes total. Ratio of difference is 2.02/2.00= 1.01 times (or1%) longer up & back. The same boat against a 0.6mph (100:1 speed ratio) current it would take 10/9.9=1.0101 minutes up and 10/10.1=0.9901 minutes back or 2.0002 minutes total. Ratio of difference is 2.0002/2.00= 1.0001 times longer up & back. Follow this algorithm so that a speed ratio of boat to current or light to Earth of (1000:1) would yield a time difference of 1.000001 and a speed ratio of light to Earth of (10,000:1) would yield a time difference of 1.00000001. The latter was closest to expected. The speed of light had been estimated at approx 660,000,000 mph long before, using some asynchrony in timing Jupiter’s moon’s periods of revolution when Jupiter was near vs. far from Earth orbit (17 minutes for 180 million miles difference) In timing light going across & back versus with & against the Aether at different points in the Earth’s revolution around the sun, if M&M saw these ratios, they could back into the Earth’s speed as one-ten thousandth of light speed or one-thousandth of light speed accordingly. Neither was true; it was the same time for both at all points in the Earth’s year. What? Either the Earth aint moving or as it turns out c is constant for all observers. I included the Wikipedia link so that you can see their super-cool mirror apparatus for carrying-out the delicate experiment and interferometer for timing the light wave interference between the two perpendicular directions. Killme.

Yesterday's antics; up and down Tahoe-Donner Ski Resort in 1 hour from my buddy's house. Beautiful sneaker conditions in snow-cup steps made it a delight. All after hand digging in the dirt doing adaptive trail work. Hanging with locals: the most youthful 57, 65 and 83 year old dudes ever, Mark,Jeff, Norm.

Ran up and down the Tahoe- Donner ski resort yesterday; 38 min up and 22 down from Mark Wellman's home. 1,300 vert of sneakering it in gorgeous butter-slushy snow cups. Perfect! All after enduro-digging in the rocks and dirt to secure a handicap accessible climbing trail. Yeah!

An electromagnetically stored image of a holographic image, inverted and real. This toy achieves the proper light vector angles using parabolic mirrors, whereas the Eye uses lenses to project the image for the photo-receptors of the brain. I so wanna build a life size one, but use trashed mirrors in a mosaic to line the parabolic macro surfaces. The holographic image would have a deconstructed look. CalTech dudes Brown and Batygin have found a planet-sized object (over 3 sigma of statistical confidence) that is beyond the Kuiper belt, that is 25 times furth...er than Neptune, and the size of Neptune. This planet's orbit is non co-planar with our solar system, but 6-10 objects are clearly orbiting around it. Same way they find Black Holes: you look for stuff orbiting around something that you cant see yet. Its called indirect evidence and it governs modern particle physics also. For now, Brown, who killed Pluto in '05 BTW, is calling it Planet Nine (and, for the past year, informally, Planet Phattie -1990s slang for cool). He notes that neither Uranus nor Neptunethe two planets discovered in modern timesended up being named by their discoverers, and he thinks that that’s probably a good thing. It’s bigger than any one person, he says: It’s kind of like finding a new continent on Earth. See graphic below.
