2021 Lecture on Compassion Developed and funded by Mark Greenberg at the Edna Bennett Pierce Prevention Research Center at Penn State and Christa Turksma, curriculum developer and teacher of mindfulness skills. Don't miss the lecture on Wednesday, April 14, 4-5:30 pm... "Self to Cell: A Biological View of Stress, Safety, and Flourishing Through the Lifespan" with Elissa Epel, Ph.D. For more information and to register for this virtual event visit: https://www.prevention.psu.edu//2021-compassion-lecture-se The forum is intended to showcase the findings and perspectives of outstanding researchers and practitioners in the areas of awareness, compassion, and empathy. "Aging is both the biggest predictor of morbidity and mortality, and yet there is great plasticity in people’s rate of aging, within any age group. I will ask what our cells can tell us about identifying the important drivers of healthy and slower aging. By looking at cellular aging mechanisms (telomeres, epigenetic clocks, inflammation), we can examine influences in midlife, before disease onset and can even identify influences on aging trajectories in newborns. I will discuss how both historical contextual and proximal factors including individual differences in stress processes shape rate cellular rate of aging, focusing on telomeres, within an individual’s life and for offspring."
