I’ve now made a handful of posts speaking about different squat variations, best uses, and how most folks don’t NEED to use a barbell to squat. Let’s take a look at a crowd favorite - the DEADLIFT. Barbell deadlifts are mandatory... for powerlifters. However, their application all but ends there.... Sure, there’s something to be said for the dopamine rush of lifting more weight than you ever thought possible off of the ground. But, practically, the deadlift isn’t a great muscle developer. And, in more cases than not, it’s inefficient to teach/coach from a bang for your buck perspective. So, how can we MORE effectively train the large posterior muscles? Although an unpopular opinion, RDLs and their different variants are my go to for training a proper hinge pattern for most people, while simultaneously smashing the hamstrings & glutes. (I actually think their application for the upper back exceeds the conventional deadlift, also). But, let’s be real - RDLs ARE NO FUN! Enter the trap bar. The most underutilized piece of strength equipment on the interwebz (IMO). Comparing the usefulness of a trap bar deadlift to a barbell deadlift is like comparing checkers to chess. The learning curve is simply much steeper for the trap bar. Pair that with the ability to shift load from the lower back to the legs, and now we have a strength movement that has increased volume & loading potential, as well as recoverability - meaning MORE GAINS.
