A year ago, the world said goodbye to Oaxacan maestro Francisco Toledo. Not only a masterful artist, but an activist over his seven decade career spent promoting and protecting the artistic culture and heritage of his home, Oaxaca. Francisco was a member of the artistic school of the Generación de la Ruptura, who believed the established art culture had become dogmatic, formulaic, and nationalistic with artists deferring to the state’s government. These artists helped universalize Mexican art through their artistic and cultural work. We miss him dearly.
