ATTN HORSE OWNERS: We have a confirmed case of the neurologic form of equine herpes virus (EHM/ EHV-1) in Butler County, PA. The barn is under quarantine and c...losely monitoring all exposed horses. Pennsylvania Dept of Agriculture is investigating and following up on all horse movement related to this incident. EHV-1 causes respiratory signs, abortions and neurologic signs in horses. Because the virus is contagious from horse to horse via nasal secretions, quarantine is instituted to decrease exposure and spread of the potentially deadly disease. Horses who have been exposed are monitored closely for early signs of the disease: *Temperatures are taken twice daily to monitor for low grade fevers. *Horses are monitored for neurologic or respiratory signs. *Biosecurity measures are implemented to stop any spread of nasal secretions between horses.
