As a follow-up to our recent schedule alterations, and some of the good questions that have followed.... yes we are trying to make calls to all scheduled surgeries and appointments to let them know they are canceled, but keep in mind we only made this decision as a 4 o’clock yesterday. We are not rescheduling as of yet, just because we are not sure how long this process will take. We are making the decisions week by week. If your puppy or kitten is in need of its first vacci...nes or booster vaccines, please bring them in and we will vaccinate them at your car. We do not want them to be vulnerable for any length of time. And lastly, please remember to support your local small businesses during this time. Many of them are making big decisions and sacrifices. Most small business owners started their business from scratch, nurtured it, watched it grow, and we know How much it means to our clients and our employees. See more

How many of your cats have been tested for feline leukemia and feline aids? These are two viral diseases that can hide dormant in a seemingly healthy cat OR in a notoriously ‘poor doing’ cat. It’s a simple blood test that we can run in-house, and knowing the status of a cat is definitely recommended before you add it to your household, but also for any stray cats or barn cats. They pose a significant risk to the rest of the cat population, as these diseases are not curable, but only manageable to some extent. This guy is still in need of a home and is tested NEGATIVE!!!

In need of help. This little cat needs a home. It was found along the road and had two fractures of the hind leg, so it had to be amputated. ALSO, Habitat 4 Hounds is in great need of fosters. They currently don’t have a location to house animals, and sadly, the number of fosters they have dictates their ability to rescue animals from neglectful and abusive situations in the community. If you’re looking for a new pet, or if you’re willing to foster animals in need, please visit their website at habitat4houndsrescue.com Possibly even consider making a donation for the holiday season!

Saw the most AMAZING thing today. This client's border collie drove those sheep from the complete opposite end of the valley right up to us, through a combination of pure instinct and signals from the owner through a whistle. BLEW my mind!!!! And this is EXACTLY why border collies don't do well with a low energy owner and no stimulation. These dogs come out of the womb yearning to herd, and obey commands, and have please a owner that gives them very clear signals. No amount ...of Prozac is going to stop your border collie from chewing out of its crate even though you take it for a short walk around the block once a week!!!!! As a mixed animal veterinarian, I LoVE seeing this dog in action. Now I have a clear vision of what this dog's purpose and expectations are.....WAY different from me just seeing him in the office on a leash! I'll post another of him starting to drive them from the opposite hill.

PSA: Inevitably, we will begin to see an influx of animals transported to the northeast after hurricane Harvey as we did after Katrina. The biggest threat this poses for us is the migration of heartworm positive dogs into our area. It's imperative that these dogs be tested AND put on heartworm prevention to guard against a recent exposure that may have only happened days ago and will not show positive on the test. The prevention is a misnomer....it actually kills anything that the dog has come into contact with in the PREVIOUS 30 days. Remember, rescue is great.... but it must be done properly!

Forest Hills Veterinary 22.04.2019

In regards to the solar eclipse, I've had several inquiries about the safety of pets. Some people have mentioned the need to bring animals indoors during those hours for the safety of their eyesight. I would disagree.... I think that's an example of personification (giving human-like characteristics or actions to an animal). They may certainly pick up on the fact that something is strange, but they are not going to know where it's coming from, and would certainly not look up at the sun to see what is happening. God's got this one figured out....let's not panic. Lol

Forest Hills Veterinary 19.04.2019

It's warble season!!! These little buggers are actually the larval form of a particular type of fly that like to burrow into the neck of smaller animals. They will feed off the host and then leave the host before metamorphosizing into a fly. Will always have that open hole for air -- and you can usually see them bobbing their head to the surface periodically. Could really weaken a small kitten or rabbit, but usually rather harmless other than infection and being disgusting.

FYI on Seresto Collars. Many of you know I'm a huge fan of these collars. In recent months, I've had many clients commenting that they don't feel the collars are working like they used to. When asked where they purchased them, they would say "online." We were alerted by Bayer last week about these possible counterfeits. Notice the difference in the packaging. It's hard for us veterinarians to promote only buying these products from licensed veterinarians because it looks like we're hungry for the money....but you know there has to be something wrong when these online pharmacies are selling the collars for less than I can get them directly from Bayer. Trust us, we're not after the money....we want your pets to be protected and healthy.

Here's Elvis, our first bilateral cryptorchid pig (neither testicle descended). The owners of course couldn't tolerate a pig in the house that behaved like a boar - he was even starting to hump the dog, so we did abdominal surgery and retrieved both testicles from the abdomen.
