The caption says it all. The CJC is open for "business". I promise you at some point someone decided it was too expensive to fix a known problem. I've ridden the elevators at least 20,000 times. I've been stuck, missed floors and had them free fall a few feet. These elevators were destined to hurt someone. Sgt. Owens is a great guy. This is such a shame. I guess they will continue to keep running the building and the penal system like a business in there until enough people get hurt.

I've visited Prisons across the country and have visited local jails on over 1,000 occasions. Prisons are evolving in the United States at a snails pace. It won't be like Norway in my lifetime...but it should. Unfortunately there is too much red tape and too many people are profiting from individuals who re-offend. We should be scared of terrorists and international threats, but a swift evolution of how we treat our incarcerated would make an infinitely greater difference on everyone's safety than what we spend much of our time and efforts on.

Today I met my juvenile lifer, Jonathan H. He is exactly 6 months older than me. He day he was sentenced to life in prison I was in the 9th grade. Time to come home.

I am pleased to announce that my office has filed one of the first PCRA petitions requesting a new sentencing based on the Supreme Court decision last week confirming that sentence of LIFE to a juvenile is unconstitutional. I agree that juveniles have diminished culpability and greater prospects for reform and that life without parole for a juvenile offender is excessive for all but the rare juvenile offender. J.H. is only six months older than I am. He has been in j...ail since 1997. He has spent more than half of his life in jail. While I’m sure he may have made his mistakes when he was 15 or 16, I can’t imagine he needs to be caged up all this time.
