On this #MemorialMonday and in recognition of #AfricanAmericanHistory month, we remember Flight 93 First Officer LeRoy Homer. LeRoy dreamed of flying since he was a young boy. He marveled at airplanes, built models and would have his first solo flight at the age of 16. By the time LeRoy would enter the US Air Force Academy he already had his private pilots license. LeRoy would deploy with the US Air Force in Operations; Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and a number of humanitaria...n missions in Somalia. In 1995, LeRoy started his career with United Airlines, and would continue serving in the US Air Force Reserves, achieving the rank of Major. On September 11, 2001 LeRoy was flying with Captain Jason Dahl on United Flight 93, when the plane was hijacked. LeRoy posthumously received many awards and citations for his actions aboard Flight93, including honorary membership in the Tuskegee Airmen, and the Congress of Racial Equality’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award. #WeRemember #Honor93 Image: LeRoy Homer's name as it appears on the Wall of Names at Flight 93 National Memorial. On this day 19 years ago, #WeRemember local community members from the Shanksville area gathered and formed the Flight 93 Ambassadors. Together, they trained to greet visitors at the Temporary Memorial, and to tell the story of Flight 93 and answer questions. After nearly two decades, and the building of a permanent Memorial the Ambassadors continue to be the smiling face so many visitors see when they visit. Every year the Ambassadors volunteer thousands of hours and welcome... hundreds of thousands from all over the world. Flight 93 National Memorial would like to take a moment to thank the dedicated Ambassadors who have served and currently serve the Memorial. We thank you for telling the story of Flight 93, remembering each passenger and crew member, and touching the lives and hearts of so many. We couldn't do it without you. #Honor93 #Flight93Ambassador #volunteerappreciation Image: The first Ambassador meeting, January 2002. We Remember. Chuck Wagner Photo Credit

This morning, Flight 93 National Memorial was encased in a think layer of ice. Only our feathered friends could get around easily, and this pheasant was enjoying some ice covered serviceberries, as our maintenance crews and law enforcement officers worked to make the sidewalks and roadways safe in the Memorial. #staysafe #pheasantinatree NPS Video: D. In case you are wondering what Flight 93 National Memorial looks like after a freshly fallen snow, here is a panoramic image from the Wetlands Bridge. #DYK As the final resting place for the passengers and crew, the crash site and debris field is the focus of the memorial's design. Here is where Flight 93 crashed and devastated a grove of Eastern Hemlock trees. Today, visitors can walk along the northern boundary of the crash site and debris field. The sandstone boulder marking the general area of impact, weighs approximately 17-tons. #MemorialMonday #Honor93 Image description: The boulder indicates the impact site of Flight 93. Sitting in front of the Hemlock tree the boulder and meadow have a layer of freshly fallen snow. NPS Photo/Wagner.

On this #NationalBirdDay we challenge you to bird watch the next time you visit a National Park. #DYK the open meadows of Flight 93 National Memorial are home to a number of unique and endangered bird species. One such species is the Short-eared Owl. Short-eared owls prefer to hunt in open tundra like terrain and often active in the daylight making them sometimes easier to spot than other owls. Flying low, sometimes hovering over the open meadows of the Memorial, you may catc...h a glimpse of one of these rare and majestic owls. On this #ThanksgivingDay, Flight 93 National Memorial would like to take a moment and reflect on what we are thankful for; the sunrises and sunsets, the virtual followers, the visitors, the dedicated staff and volunteers, the partnerships and surrounding communities. We want to thank you for your continued resolution to honor the passengers and crew members of Flight 93. On October 18, 1972 the #CleanWaterAct, was established to regulate pollutants into the waters of the United States and regulate quality standards for surface waters. We often forget about the significance that environmental acts played to improve and protect our environment. At Flight 93 National Memorial the wetlands originally part of the surface mining that took place on the site, have been transformed into a self sustaining natural habitat and aquatic eco-system. The w...etlands and ponds adjacent to the crash site are preserved as natural features in the design of Flight 93 National Memorial, and function as a naturally-occurring reservoir for storm water that flows from higher elevations. Alan Anthony Beaven, a passenger on board United Flight 93, prosecuted violators of the Clean Water Act. A native of New Zealand, Alan was an environmental attorney focusing on clean air and water. He passed the bar exam in his native country of New Zealand, New York, England, and California. He was passionate about protecting the water and timelessly prosecuted violators of the act. Alan was flying back to California to handle one last case, before planning to leave for a year's stay in India to provide legal advice regarding that country's pollution and deforestation problems. It’s Hispanic Heritage Month! From September 15 to October 15, join us at Flight 93 and at park sites across the nation in celebrating the achievements of Hispanic and Latino Americans and their rich contributions to our society and culture. Two of the passengers on Flight 93, Andrew Garcia and Waleska Martinez, were of Hispanic and Latino heritage, respectively. Waleska, who was from Puerto Rico, became the lead automation (information technology) specialist in the New York ...regional office of the Census Bureau. She was a calm, dedicated employee who mentored her co-workers. Waleska loved to dance, play softball, and spend time with her brother. On September 11 she was traveling to a conference with her colleague Marion Britton. Andrew (Sonny) Garcia was the president and owner of Cinco Group, an industrial products supply company. He was athletic and passionate about aviation. With his vibrant personality, Sonny brought sunshine to everyone in a room. He was also quite the prankster. On September 11, he was returning home from a business meeting. #HispanicHeritageMonth #FindYourPark #EncuentraTuParque

When it rains at Flight 93 National Memorial, the Memorial gets all kinds of 'newt' visitors. These small creatures emerge, and can be be seen throughout the Memorial. The eastern newt is native to eastern North America. These three newts are juveniles, called efts. Efts have a ruddy brown color on their top with distinct orange spots running down their body. When adults, they will turn to a greenish color with black spots and return to the water. The eastern newt can live up... to 15 years. When walking around the memorial keep an eye on where you are walking, you might have a few of these newts in your path. #RecreateResponsibly #FindYourPark Photo credit: NPS G.O'Hara Description: Looking down the Flight Path below the Wall of Names three newts are gathered on one of the granite tiles.
