It is with extreme sadness we announce the unexpected and sudden passing of our brother, John F. Swank Jr. John was a husband, son, father, friend, teacher, mentor, and dedicated police officer for the City of Greensburg. John joined our department in 2002 and rose through the ranks to Detective Sergeant. He was an extremely dedicated police officer in every sense of the word. John had a knack for handling and solving the tough crimes. As a detective, focusing o...n sexual assaults, crimes against the family, and drug violations. It is impossible to count the number of people John has helped and touched throughout his career. If a victim was in need, John was there. Whether it was during his shift, or he was called out at 3am. John was there. A compassionate and professional presence for families during their greatest time of need. Always on call and always ready to lend a reassuring and empathic word to a victim or witness. He would travel to the ends of earth and even work without sleep to provide justice for crime victims. He took great pride in assisting these victims and their families. He was committed to not only educating himself, but also other police officers and aspiring officers. John obtained a PhD in Criminal Justice and used this along with his experiences to mentor and help younger officers in the department. He spent what spare time he did have teaching criminal justice students at WCCC and Penn State to share his love of being a police officer. This loss is an unexpected and difficult one for us as his coworkers and friends. The City lost a compassionate, hard-working, and relentless servent of public good. We as officers have lost a mentor and a dear friend. Over the next several days our officers will be wearing black mourning bands across our badges to honor our friend while we grieve. This grief will eventually be replaced by our fond memories of John. His stories at shift change, the laughs and conversations over pizza in squad room, the Christmas parties, and the countless other moments we have shared with our friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with John’s family during this difficult time. Rest Easy, Johnny Bang Bang Swank. See more
