The Red Death, trapped in her black apartment, would need an emissary to walk abroad in Dickens's world. She would choose a woman in isolation, left at the altar years earlier: a woman by the name of Miss Havisham. #evermorewithforgottenlore #charlesdickens #edgarallanpoe #illimitabledominion

POE'S FINAL JOURNEY - PART 5 October 1, 1849 Before daybreak, the surroundings of the Wissahickon Valley become an unfamiliar landscape. Poe has descended into the maelstrom, the dominion of the Red Death.... Poe discovers a grave which he readily unearths with his spade, hoping to find Virginia within. He instead finds a wasted, near spectral Madeline Usher who retreats from Poe with terrified recognition and vanishes into the woods. Poe glances about him, realizing that he stands amid a field of graves where there were none before. He leans into the daunting task and exhumes one casket after another, each time greeted by the inert visage of a beautiful woman, but not one is his Virginia. Physically spent, Poe casts the spade aside and crosses to the riverbank where he sits upon a rock and extracts ink, pen, and paper from his valise. He composes, It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea, That a maiden there lived whom you may know By the name of Annabel Lee; And this maiden she lived with no other thought Than to love and be loved by me. As Poe continues to pen the lines, a warm breeze whirls the desiccated leaves about him. Amid the dead detritus of the vortex, Annabel Lee is written into life, a semblance of beauty worthy of Poe’s lost wife. The writer, weary from his exertions, rests his head and drifts into a dreamless slumber for he is already in a world of his dreams.

POE'S FINAL JOURNEY - PART 4 September 30, 1849 Poe departs Baltimore for Philadelphia aboard the Philadelphia, Wilmington, & Baltimore Railroad. He disembarks at the Gray’s Ferry Station where his trunk has been held for him.... Taking only a small valise from the trunk, Poe travels northwest on foot through Fairmount Park, arriving at Laurel Hill Cemetery in the late afternoon where he acquires a spade from a willing sexton. Poe continues on foot to the Wissahickon Valley and winds his way to the Kelpius Cave. In the waning light of the day, he lights a lantern and inspects the interior of the small enclosure. It is empty with no sign of habitation. Poe takes the spade in one hand and his valise in the other. He travels further into the valley in the growing dark. HISTORICAL LEGEND: The Cave of Kelpius is believed to have been a place of meditation for Johannes Kelpius a scholar and mystic who helmed the Society of the Woman of the Wilderness. The society came to believe that the world would end in 1694, earning them the rather odious honor of being the first Doomsday Cult. One account claims that Kelpius traveled with a mysterious box that contained the legendary Philosopher’s Stone, long sought after by alchemists for its ability to change base metals to gold and prolong life. The same account has it that Kelpius ordered this box thrown into the Schuylkill River shortly before his death in 1708.
