Back in my juke box hero days, I would find the longest song to play to get the most out of my quarters. After going through a few long songs, I noticed a certain reaction in the bar to a particular one - Purple Rain. The groan after the first chord, then drowning out conversation for the next few minutes, followed by everyone singing along to the chorus half way in, then the realization the song hasn't ended with two minutes of piano and strings to go. Eventually, Purple Rai...n would be the only song I'd play on the juke box. Every time I'd walk into the Rocket Club in DC's Chinatown I'd play it, so much that the bartenders would look for me when the song came on. Purple Rain became a running theme for us: the name of our kick ball team, karaoke requests, I even tried to make this our wedding song (fail).
