Atlantis In the early 70's, Frank Frazetta began work on a piece titled "Atlantis". The first version is dated 1982, so while it was done first it wasn't signed until later on. The problem Frank had with the first version was that he painted the guard statue too low, so there wasn't enough room in the water for him to do the reflection. In typical Frazetta fashion, he was planning on repainting the entire thing on the same canvas, but thankfully Frank Jr. stepped in and trad...ed him a new, clean canvas and was given the unfinished Atlantis piece as a "thank you" from his father. The second version (dated 1972) was completed shortly after the first one was finished. It's one of the few examples of Frazetta work that is half finished, so it's fun to study both side-by-side in the museum! If you look very closely at the second version, you can even see a pencil line where he was setting up the horizon so that he didn't make the same error again! William Frazetta The Frazetta Art Museum in East Stroudsburg, PA, is owned and run solely by Frank Frazetta Jr, Lori Frazetta, and their son, William Frazetta. It is the largest public collection of Frazetta works and is funded by donations and purchases made at the museum and on the official Frazetta Museum website (no other Frazetta sites contribute). The museum is open every Thursday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm. If you would like to add some Atlantean artwork to your home, check out our website! Robert Barrett recounts, "I saw this preliminary during my two-week visit with the Frazettas in 1970. It was one of the several pieces that was scattered around the room that I slept in (Frank was very cavalier with his art, sketches, preliminaries, as well as paintings). I picked it up and carried it downstairs to discuss it with Frank. He told me that it was a preliminary for the Ace Book Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar that was rejected by Donald Wollheim. J. Allen St. John... illustrated the same scene in the first edition book." Previously unpublished Excerpt from Frazetta Sketchbook Volume ll by Vanguard Publishing. Plot summary A greedy, outlawed Belgian army officer, Albert Werper, in the employ of a criminal Arab, secretly follows Tarzan to Opar. There, Tarzan loses his memory after being struck on the head by a falling rock in the treasure room during an earthquake. 31 Days of "December Dames " Day 11 "The Countess" Featured on the paperback cover of "Mission Earth" by L. Ron Hubbard ... Artwork by Frank Frazetta circa 1991 Frazetta’s The Countess is drawn from the pages of L. Ron Hubbard’s bestselling ten-volume series, Mission Earth. The painting depicts Countess Krak, the falsely condemned murderess, prisoner of Spiteos and sweetheart of Jettero Heller. With no change of expression whatever, she walked at a normal pace straight at that wild, freshly captured lepertige! quote from Mission Earth L. Ron Hubbard worked with many of the greats of illustration during the 1930s and 40s, and so it was not for nothing that he termed Frank Frazetta The King of Illustrationa tribute to the artist’s mastery, popularity, and enduring influence on the world of art. Frank Frazetta went on to paint several more works of art from Ron’s fiction universes. One such universe is Mission Earth and its heroine, the Countess, described as heart-stoppingly beautiful and statuesque, young, but she never smiled. She could train anything to do anything and fast. She was a genius at training. As for the lepertiges (a mix between leopards and tigers): The beast was sitting there, all nine hundred pounds of it, unfettered, perfectly free to demolish everyone in the place. Its black and orange mottled fur was matted. The fangs looked like daggers. The Countess displays Frazetta’s exceptional ability to bring the written word to life on his canvas. www.frazettamuseum.com #frazetta #frankfrazetta #frazettaartmuseum #frazettamuseum #countess

31 Days of "December Dames " Day 10 "Aros" Featured on the cover of the paperback novel "The Serpent" by Jane Gaskell Artwork by Frank Frazetta circa 1967... Frank Frazetta The Serpent (aka "Aros") Paperback Novel Cover Painting Original Art (Paperback Library, 1967). Used on the cover of The Serpent, the Frazetta family has always titled this piece as "Aros". It's a gorgeous piece with rich, warm browns and red shadows that truly set off the green of the Serpent itself juxtaposed against the pale flesh of the longhaired brunette central figure. As with most of Frazetta's works, it begs to tell a complete story to you with just a single look. One of the reasons this image is so compelling is that it hits two of the biggest fantasy art tropes at the same time... lovely semi-naked female figure, and a giant snake! The image was used on the 1967 paperback edition for Jane Gaskell's The Serpent, which was the first in the Atlan Saga series. This oil painting was created on 17.5" x 22" pressboard and has been open front framed to 23" x 27". There are a few very minor surface abrasions in the upper section; however, they are hardly noticeable and the piece has a fetching, eye-catching quality to it. Signed and dated in the left center of the image area. www.frazettamuseum.com #frazetta #frankfrazetta #frazettaartmuseum #frazettamuseum
