In support of #blackouttuesday, we’re sharing some of our favorite Black-owned bookstores around the country, as well as our tour guides’ favorite books about B...lack history in the cities we run tours. A big part of being a Free Tours By Foot tour guide is sharing this history and our guides recommend these books to all guests #freetoursbyfoot #blackhistory

On this day in 1804, Alexander Hamilton died at the home of friend William Bayard Jr. following final visits from friends and family a day after Aaron Burr shot... Hamilton in their infamous duel. This mourning ring, which was on loan to the Museum from Alexander Hamilton's fifth great- grandson, was worn by Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton following the death of her husband of 23 years. Following a common practice of the 18th century, Elizabeth wore the mourning ring with a piece of her late husband’s hair encased under the glass jewel. She lived for more than 50 years after Hamilton was killed, dying on November 9, 1854, at the age of 97.
