Ranger Nancy's Report: Christmas Bird Count: The Christmas Bird Count (CBC), a program of the National Audubon Society, is a winter bird census, where volunteers go out over a 24-hour period on one day to identify and count birds. You can read all about it here: https://www.audubon.org/conser/science/christmas-bird-count Riverview Park is getting into the action this year on Saturday December 26th. Because this is our first year of organized counting, we’re seeking volunt...eers that have some birding experience. Once we have a cadre of folks, we’ll assign you to a particular section of the park. Email [email protected] to get involved.

Ranger Nancy's Report: Sky Watch It may be winter and the Allegheny Observatory is closed but it’s a great time to sky gaze! Jupiter and Saturn will be putting on a show this month that hasn't been seen in roughly 800 years. Astronomers are calling it the Great Conjunction of 2020. On December 21 the winter solstice the two largest planets in our solar system will appear to almost merge in Earth’s night sky. While you are gazing, kindly consider joining up with the I...nternational Dark Sky Association of Pittsburgh to eliminate unnecessary & harmful light pollution. Good news from the Mayor's Office for Riverview Park! City Earmarks $1.8 Million to Address Riverview Park Landslide Conditions - PITTSBURGH, PA (November 11, 2020) The City of Pittsburgh is dedicating more than $1.8 million to address landslides around Riverview Park. The Office of Management and Budget has earmarked $1,878,960 in Regional Asset District (RAD) capital funds for the park, which is will be used for upgrades and geotechnical studies of various hillsides. ... The first site that the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) will be addressing is the hillside near the park’s Chapel Shelter. "Residents are eager to see the Chapel Shelter landslide and collapsing portion of Riverview Avenue fixed so they can get back to enjoying Riverview Park, Councilman Bobby Wilson said. I am relieved the City has been able to maintain this essential funding to move forward with the remediation of the Chapel Shelter landslide, and am thrilled that this administration was able to identify additional funding to address other landslides in the park. Roughly $1 million of the funding will be used for the Chapel Shelter site and the remaining funds will be for conducting geotechnical studies elsewhere. Thank you from the Friends of Riverview Park to Bill Peduto City of Pittsburgh - Office of the Mayor Bobby Wilson Office of Councilman Bobby Wilson - Pittsburgh District 1 Dan Gilman Pittsburgh Mobility and Infrastructure

THROWBACK THURSDAY| Honoring our cherished spaces In 2005, crews removed dilapidated tennis courts behind the Riverview Park Chapel Shelter in preparation for seeding a new lawn area for informal socialization. The landscape had become dominated by invasive Siberian elms, which were shading out a century-old collection of lilacs. The invasive species were removed, and native trees and shrubs were installed. By June 2008, the building’s restoration was completed. The interior ...was gutted and rebuilt with termite-resistant materials. An updated kitchen was installed, the porch and the restrooms were made wheelchair-accessible, and utilities were buried to increase the beauty and safety of the area. The new building otherwise looks very much like it did when it was first moved into the park, with a steeple, dormers, and charming color scheme. The Riverview Park Chapel Shelter is now the most rented shelter in the city of Pittsburgh! The Parks Conservancy is honored to work alongside the City of Pittsburgh - Office of the Mayor, local community members, and to have friends like you to support our neighborhood and park improvement projects year-round! I want to thank the men of F3 Pittsburgh for taking time with me to help clean up around the Valley Refuge Shelter in Riverview Park. We had a fantastic workout... this past Saturday, but just as important is giving back to our community. We filled a large trashbag with needles, pizza boxes, and all kinds of trash. I appreciate these men helping me to make this a safer community for our kids and families.

Restoration improvements included new flooring, an updated kitchen, handicap-accessible restrooms, the recreation of the historic steeple and dormers, and a return to the historically-inspired design. The landscape was also restored, with a new trail connection, removal of invasive species, and the creation of new garden beds. THEN & NOW | The Riverview Park Chapel Shelter Parks and green spaces are essential parts of the lives of all Pittsburghers. Throughout the past several months..., we’ve recognized the importance of parks in helping the community cope and heal during the crisis. This has allowed us to reflect upon our long-standing partnership with the City of Pittsburgh and the work we have accomplished together to restore Pittsburgh's park system to excellence. Read below to learn more about the Riverview Park Chapel Shelter, one of the many restoration projects of the City of Pittsburgh and Parks Conservancy. The restoration of the Riverview Park Chapel Shelter, now the most requested shelter in the city parks, was completed in June 2008. The building, which had been closed to the public and slated for demolition in 2005, was completely refurbished to make it accessible and enjoyable for park users. The Parks Conservancy is honored to work alongside the City of Pittsburgh - Office of the Mayor, local community members, and to have friends like you to support our neighborhood and park improvement projects year-round!
