The first U.S. President known to fly onboard an aircraft while in office was President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1943. The Dixie Clipper, pictured below, was the first aircraft that transported a sitting president. The secret flight took Roosevelt from Miami, Florida to Casablanca, North Africa to discuss World War II strategy with Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle. The current Air Force One was first placed in service in 1990 during the administration of George H.W. Bush, who was himself a decorated World War II Naval Aviator. This past week I was invited by Fox29 and CBS3 in Philadelphia to comment on the NTSB's Public Hearing about the January 26, 2020 Calabasas, CA crash that tragically killed Kobe Bryant and eight others. While many have publicly blamed the pilot, the charter operator and helicopter manufacturer also share blame for failing to install critical terrain warning safety equipment that is required on other helicopters. Though the NTSB issued a Safety Alert about this years ago, today the FAA protects these companies and has still not mandated Terrain Awareness Warning Systems (TAWS) for passenger helicopters. Shockingly, Congress may act more quickly than the FAA by requiring TAWS through proposed legislation. Here is a link to my Fox29 clip: https://www.fox29.com/video/899234
