Logical, mathematically inclined, and analytical. These are some words that might come to mind when one thinks of an engineer. But for Nelson Mora, you’d have to include: artistic, personable, and empathetic, too. The University of Florida graduate started his career at Gannett Fleming 12 years ago in roadway design. Since then, he’s shifted toward transportation planning and now oversees all staff, pursuits, and project delivery related to planning projects in Florida. The... engineering curriculum doesn’t teach you people skills, Nelson added. But he knows that relating to people by communicating effectively is one of the most important aspects of his job. I try to humanize our transportation projects through thoughtful verbal and visual communication and plenty of listening. We asked Nelson a few questions to get to know him. On behalf of our Military Veterans at Gannett Fleming employee resource group, we would like to take time today to celebrate and honor the courage and sacrifice of those who served in the Vietnam War. As we continue to pay tribute to members of the armed services and their families, we stand alongside organizations whose goals align with ours. This year, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) has reached a major milestone with the goal of finding and matching a photograph ...for every service member on The Wall in Washington, D.C. Out of the more than 58,000 names etched on The Wall, less than 100 photos are needed to complete the effort. VVMF’s Wall of Faces effort aims to connect a face and a story to each of the 58,279 service members with names inscribed on The Wall, so that future generations will better understand the impact of the Vietnam War on American families. Each name represents a life cut short and a family changed forever by their loss. Putting a face to every name helps further preserve their legacies. Did you know that, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) World Report on Disability, more than 1 billion people have a disability? That’s 15% of the world’s population, and of this number, an estimated 450 million are living with an invisible illness, such as a mental or neurological condition. At Gannett Fleming, we firmly believe in #inclusionforeverybody and aim to remove barriers for those living with disabilities through the work we do, such as designing acce...ssibility upgrades for the LIRR Enhanced Station in Long Island, New York. #GivingTuesday is a global day of generosity. At Gannett Fleming, supporting our communities is deeply rooted in our culture, and we believe there is a significant need in our communities for us all to do our part. Whether it’s making someone smile, helping a neighbor, showing up for the people we care about, or donating to those who need our help, every act of kindness counts and everyone has something to give. Here are some suggestions on how to make today (and every day) a day of giving!

This donation could not have come at a better time, said Judy Lynn Mittler, principal at Thomas J McCann Intermediate School 125 (IS 125) in New York City, referring to the 25 writing tablets Gannett Fleming recently donated to the school. With most NYC school students learning remotely due to COVID-19, and in this economy with school budgets being cut, donations are extremely significant, she added. This is greatly appreciated. We’re proud to support the New York City ...community and its school system. Pictured below are Nick Dandolos on the far right and IS 125 schoolteachers holding the new writing tablets. #NYC #education #weareinthistogether NYC Department of Education

September marks another National Preparedness Month, reminding us all to take precautions to prepare for natural disasters like earthquakes, wildfires, tsunamis, and hurricanes that can wreak havoc on our communities, said U.S. Representative Peter DeFazio, chairman of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. As our nation continues to manage the spread of COVID-19, there’s no better time to plan for emergencies: Know which types of disasters could affect your... area and how to protect your employees. Determine how you will communicate with your team before, during, and after a disaster. Establish a recovery plan.
