Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine 27.05.2021

Ida L. Castro, vice president for community engagement, associate dean for equity and inclusion and chief diversity officer, has announced her plans to depart from Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (GCSOM) at the end of June. Ida has contributed to GCSOM, our mission and this community in so many ways that will be remembered by many of our constituents, and especially by the many students who have benefited from her wisdom and from the opportunities she created for them over the years, said Steven J. Scheinman, MD, GCSOM president and dean. We should all be grateful to her and congratulate her on her plans, which include the luxury of slowing down a bit, something she well deserves. https://bddy.me/3h5aRaY

Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine’s Center for Student Engagement, Diversity & Inclusion along with the Asians in the Diaspora Planning Committee presented a series of events in April to celebrate Asian cultures! Although May is the official Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, student planners chose April to recognize the contributions and the history, culture and achievements of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. Asia is broad... and encompasses many diverse cultures, said student planner Jade Zheng. We tried to plan events that highlighted the cultures of many AAPI students here at Geisinger, along with more generalized themes and events that would impact more students. On April 21, Dr. Kevin Ahuna kicked off AAPI cultural heritage month with his talk, Asian, American, and Male: Identity at the Intersection. Dr. Ahuna lives and works in Buffalo, N.Y., as a student affairs professional and adjunct professor. His academic interests focus on how race, gender and social class impact college students and this provides the foundation for his work in his current role as the director of the Intercultural and Diversity Center at the University at Buffalo. Following Dr. Ahuna’s talk, participants enjoyed Indian food. The students also held craft-making events that included mask designs using Koi fish and lotus flower themes to keep in mind important symbols in many Asian cultures. Other crafts featured were paper lantern making, Chinese paper cutting art and Indian rangoli design activity. Various tea sachets these with preparation instructions were included for participants to enjoy, as well.

On Sept. 22, Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine’s MD Class of 2024 participated in the Green Dot Bystander Intervention workshop. Green Dot is a strategy that focuses on the powerful role we can all play as bystanders, whether we are students, faculty or staff. Pictured are some of our GCSOM community members who are continuing the conversation after the workshop ended. Whether it is having discussions with peers, a Green Dot Zoom virtual background or having the Green Dot logo in an email signature, our community is committed to safety. What’s your Green Dot? #livethegreendot #greendot365
