#CincoDeMayo recognizes the Mexican Army’s victory on May 5, 1862, over France at the First Battle of Puebla, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza, during the Franco-Mexican War. In the early 1860s, as the Civil War erupted,Mexican-Mexican American communities took up the banner of the Cinco De Mayo celebration as a way to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy. Today, in the United States, Americans celebrate Mexican-American heritage and pride annually.

In nursing homes, it’s particularly important that frontline workers get vaccinated to protect both themselves and our residents. Purim, also known as the Festival of Lots, begins at sunset on February 25 and ends at sunset on February 26. This Jewish holiday commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from Haman in the ancient Persian Empire, a story recorded in the Biblical Book of Esther (Megillat Esther). It is celebrated with readings, gifts of food, charity, feasting and merriment. Eating triangle shaped foods such as Kreplach or Hamantaschen pastries are a widely held tradition, with the belief that the food represents Haman's three-cornered hat and that eating them represents abolishing the evil associated with him. Memory is the means by which our brain stores information. It is closely tied to emotions. Research shows that for people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, the emotions felt during an experience linger long after the memory of the event fades. As a caregiver, you can help a loved one with dementia enjoy their best quality of life by providing opportunities for them to engage in meaningful activities (e.g., cooking or baking, playing with their grandchild, petting a dog, looking through family photos, watching home videos). Interactions that leave an older adult feeling joyful, even after memories of them are gone, are essential. You can help your loved one hold onto cherished moments by exploring ways to remember. It’s an adage most of us have heard in one form or another: people might not remember what you said, but they’ll remember how you made them feel.
