You can find these woodland beauties in the nursery now. Thank you for planting native plants.

Here’s a Hummingbird Moth visiting some Bluebells that were still in bloom today. The moth pupa overwinters in a thin cocoon, waking from their bed of leaf litter to the flower filled dream of springtime.

In winter, we love slow days on the couch reading. Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Kimmerer came highly recommended by a number of folks in our circle and it definitely lived up to its reputation... Kimmerer - a Native American botanist and professor of Environmental Biology - weaves together Western science and the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. Her book demonstrates our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world and our call to share our unique gifts with the earth as generously as we have been nurtured. This kind of intention fuels the work we do.

Insects, predominantly, are dependent on very specific plants for their survival. If those plants are not available, those insects cannot survive. And if those insects are not available, the birds and mammals that feed on them cannot survive. And if those birds and mammals are not around, then we human animals are going to have a hard time surviving. It is not a coincidence that honeysuckle blooms while hummingbirds are migrating. Asters are in bloom as the monarch butterfl...ies begin their trip south. The insect population is at its highest during nesting season for birds. This is nature. Studies show that 90% of native insects depend solely on native plants. Whether the discussion is climate change, habitat fragmentation, extinction of species, flooding, drought, erosion, destruction of soil quality among countless other issues facing us, native plants can help.
