THE GAY ALTERNATIVE was an independent magazine published out of Philadelphia from 1972 to 1976. (Check out the advertisement for our own store, back at the South Street location.) It ran book and movie reviews, opinion pieces, and short fiction with the aim to gain "a clearer insight into the gay community and ourselves." All issues have been preserved online thanks to the John J. WIlcox, Jr. Archives at the William Way LGBT community center: https://voices.revealdigital.org/&. But if you're interested in owning a piece of gay Philly history, check out the issues in our magazine rack. ($24.99 while we've got 'em.)

"A memoir in essays about so many thingsgrowing up in an abusive cult, coming of age as a lesbian in the military, forced out by homophobia, living on the margins as a working class woman and what it’s like to grow into the person you are meant to be. Hough’s writing will break your heart." Roxane Gay At once razor-sharp, profoundly brave, and often very, very funny, the essays in LEAVING ISN'T THE HARDEST THING interrogate our notions of ecstasy, queerness, and what it means to live freely. Each piece is a reckoning: of survival, identity, and how to reclaim one’s past when carving out a future. Paperback, $16.95. Available in-store and online: https://www.queerbooks.com//leaving-isnt-the-hardest-thin/

Their arresting poetry has recently gained them a place in the canon, and their extensive engagement with other writers puts them at the centre of fin de siècle literary culture.
Did you know Winston Churchill was also an author? His series on WWII earned him a Nobel Prize for Literature. We have all six volumes in a matching set! $14.99 each.

Philly AIDS Thrift (710 S. 5th Street) and PAT@Giovanni's Room (12th & Pine) are proud to announce we have now surpassed $3,000,000 in total donations to date to Philly area HIV/AIDS service organizations. THANK YOU to all the Shoppers, Donors, Volunteers and Staff who got us there. NONE of this is possible without YOU! Those of you who remember our original store around the corner on Bainbridge know how small and hardscrabble our beginnings were. We just happen to be celebr...ating our 15th anniversary on the same weekend that we reached the THREE MILLION DOLLAR mark, so we're thinking back to the fall of 2005 and how DIY and penny-pinching it all was back then. Now we only pinch nickels and dimes True Story: We were closing in on $3,000,000 right before the lockdown hit, we thought we'd be celebrating this last spring, but here we are back in business and now we've busted through $3,000,000 in the early fall instead. You know what? We'll take it! Thanks again to EVERYONE who helped us get this far. And THANKS for SHARING. See more
