Recently two young boys from town, Logan and Carter Ferri donated a collection of insulators that they went out treasure hunting for. They rode their bikes up and down the railroad tracks for quite a few miles, gathered up what they found, cleaned them up and then donated them to the museum. How wonderful that our younger generation is showing an interest in our local history! This was a most thoughtful gesture on their part and we proudly displayed a sample of each type insu...lator they collected. Of course, my curiosity peaked looking at their treasures, so I decided to do some research on the insulators!! The years 1875 through 1930 were considered the heyday of the glass insulators. Hundreds of millions were made in the East and MidWest. The insulators were used for telegraph lines and then for telephone lines as well. there were also porcelain and ceramic insulators that were used as well. Most glass insulators were made in some shade of blue, Aqua blue, green, Amber, red and clear. Clear glass insulators were manufactured predominately after 1930. The average person finding an insulator along the railroad tracks will find those were manufactured by Hemingray Glass. Insulators were made in a variety of styles over the years, the most common was Hemingray-42 which was manufactured starting in 1921. Each insulator was attached to the crossarm on each pole by being screwed onto Wooden or metal pegs. A steel or copper tie wire was attached to the insulator and then connected with the communication wire. (In the picture is part of a wooden peg!) The ceramic insulators were called spool insulators. During the 1960's-1980's most of the lines were dismantled as modern technology advanced. What hadn't been dismantled, many insulators became targets for people with BB guns and were destroyed. Driving along a railroad line today you might be lucky enough to still see some of the glass insulators on the poles, and now you have a bit of history about those insulators! Thank you again Logan and Carter, as I learned a lot researching your donation! your treasure consisted of all Hemingray - 42 glass insulators which could be close to if not 100 years old now!

Hello friends! Hope that everyone is well! Time for a little history blog! As many of the Gouldsboro residents know, the bridge on 4th Street over West End Pond is being replaced. It was the last of the single lane bridges in town. This old bridge holds some great memories for me, as I grew up on this street. For many many years the bridge was just a plank bridge. New planks would be installed and in a matter of months, they would starting lifting and warping so every time a...Continue reading
