Happy Mother's Day to all mothers, godmothers and mother figures, who have made a positive difference in someone's life!
Today, May 8, is the anniversary of V-E Day. We salute those of the Greatest Generation who sacrificed to bring victory to our nation. In Monessen, V-E Day was one of relief and thanksgiving. Stores, theatres, bars, clubs and banks closed for the day following President Truman's announcement and the proclamation from Governor Martin. Schools dismissed at noon, after a morning of listening to radio reports in the auditoriums and gymnasiums. The Monessen Ministerial Association held a 30 minute prayer service in the Methodist Church, while St. Leonard's and St Cajetan's Roman Catholic churches held special masses. Flags lined the streets, as the air raid sirens were sounded. Only the local industries worked at full capacity, for while we had achieved victory in Europe, the war still raged in the Pacific.
On May 5, 1921, Mrs. George Albright, who was formerly Miss Helen Patrick of Monessen, headlined the vaudeville show at the Star Theatre on Sixth Street with her husband, under their stage name of the "Vandergools".
We wish a very Happy and Blessed Easter to our members and supporters of the Orthodox faith.
Wishing all of you a joyous and blessed Easter!
Wishing you a Happy May Day!
Bishop Larry J. Kulick spent some time in the kitchen with the team from #thecatholicaccent to show parishioners how to make Slovak Easter Cheese called cirak or hrudka.
At the end of April of 1921, preparations were underway for the annual May Crowning service at St. Leonard's Roman Catholic Church. One hundred and twenty-five girls will participate in the May 1 event. Miss Hannah Hopkins will be the May Queen with Virginia Fallon and Agnes Keefer as Maids of Honor. The girls will wear dresses of blue and white and carry bouquets of flowers. Other girls will carry hoops trimmed in smilax and roses.
Happy April Fools' Day to all!
To those of the Jewish faith celebrating Passover, we extend our wishes for Peace, Prosperity and Joy.
We send our best wishes to our Greek friends, members and supporters on the Bicentennial of Greek Independence from Ottoman rule.
