Many thanks to the Allied News and GCAHS&M member, Mary Ann Collins, for this uplifting optimistic article... For us at the GCAHS&M, 2021 is full of hope, promise and the expectation of better times. Already we are working toward our April reopening; we planning for our best year ever. Before our opening day, however, we invite you to walk past our building at 111 College Avenue to see our first window display of the new year, Great Expectations, 2021. Mary Anne’s thoughtful article describes what you will see in the display and, also, how our great expectations for the future tie us to those who have preceded us. Please read on...
It’s Trivia Tuesday! Over the next several weeks Olde Town Grove City along with the GCAHS&M will host an opportunity for you to win a local gift. Just answer trivia questions relating to Grove City’s historyprovided by your GCAHS&Mthat will be found weekly on the Olde Town Facebook page,
For those of you who could not attend our 3rd Annual GC Cemetery Walk on August 17, here’s your chance to be there virtually. The link below will take you to the video of our event at GC’s Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery on Gill Road. As I noted here previously, this cemetery is the resting place of many Italian immigrants who came to GC in the late 19th century. A unique aspect of this cemetery is the ceramic portraits on many of the headstones. I know you will find this interesting. And as I mentioned in my previous post, after you view the video, please linger awhile on our site. There are so many wonderful things to explore there!
Last August 2, the PA Cable Network (PCN) aired an half hour episode of its popular series, It's History, featuring our GCAHS&M! Several of you who saw it wrote that it was an impressive well-done program. Unfortunately, for many of you, it was accessible only in PA. I've been asked if it would be available to a wider audience at a later date. And, now, it is!... Thanks to the PCN, we're pleased to provide this link to the program at our new GCAHS&M website. It’s a marvelous glimpse into your Society & Museum. And after you view the video, please linger awhile on our site. There are so many wonderful things to explore there!
Please read this heartwarming article, STORIES BEHIND THE STONES. It details the stories presented at our recent tour of Grove City’s Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Thank you to Allied News and, in particular, Monica Pryts for this wonderful article and for continuing to keep alive the legacy that belongs to all of us who love Grove City. Please read on. It will give you a glimpse of the hearty immigrant community that helped to make Grove City the wonderful place that it is today.
GC author and GCAHS&M member Lillian Reynolds Reeher’s new book, DEAR PEOPLE, has been highlighted in a wonderful article in this week’s Allied News. Ms. Reeher’s book, based upon letters written by her great-aunt beginning in the late 1800s, is an intimate look into everyday life in Western PA of the time. DEAR PEOPLE is the latest of Reeher’s books that chronicle the history of the areas surrounding GC and the legacy we all share. It and other books by Ms. Reeher may be purchased on our GCAHS&M website or in person at our 111 College Avenue location.
Thanks for the article Allied News! Don’t miss it folks! Our 3rd Annual Cemetery Walk...
Please join presenters, Kathy Jack & Jane Cleary, Monday evening, August 17, at 6:30 p.m. for our 3rd annual GCAHS&M Cemetery Walk. This year we will explore GC’s Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery on Gill Road. This Roman Catholic cemetery, founded March 8, 1907, also know as Beloved Disciple Cemetery and Gill Road Cemetery, is the resting place of many Italian immigrants who came to GC in the late 19th century. A unique aspect of this cemetery is the ceramic portraits on many of the headstones. Parking will be available in the Pine Township Service Area parking lot adjacent to the cemetery. There is no charge for the event; donations will be graciously accepted Rain Date, Tuesday, August 18, 2020 at 6:30 p.m.
