Guild House Hotel 10.11.2020

An in-house favorite when it comes to historic highlights of our property, this stunning fireplace features beautiful Delft tiles. Delftware includes pottery objects such as plates, vases and other ornamental forms and tiles. The start of the style was around 1600, and the most highly regarded period of production is about 16401740. Delftware originated in the city of Delft, in the Netherlands, and was a major industry, exporting all over Europe. Using this mantel as a focal point, and the rooms’ namesake, Gabrielle de Veaux Clements, as inspiration, our design team, Rohe Creative, has outlined plans for a gorgeous junior suite. Trust us, you can’t wait to rest your head here.

Mary Grew (1813-1896) was a radical, anti-slavery, activist. After slavery was abolished she turned her focus to preaching and women’s suffrage. Mary was a founder of the New Century Club (predecessor of the New Century Guild) and the Pennsylvania Women’s Suffrage Association, of which she served as president for over two decades. Driven by the shared experience of ostracism at the World Anti-Slavery Convention, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott began planning the Sen...eca Falls Convention, which eventually took place in 1848. Mary Grew assisted in organizing this groundbreaking summit. These are merely a few highlights of Mary’s life work - she was a force to be reckoned with and dedicated her life to the fight for equality. Guild House Hotel has named a beautiful, 560 square foot, junior suite in her honor.

Guild House will proudly offer a wide range of rooms & suites - our largest suite is over 1000 sq ft, smallest 225 sq ft, with plenty of options in between. Each space will feature a unique design, reflecting the story of a woman who played a significant role in the creation/operation of the New Century Guild.

Previously the smallest room in the house, this space will be merged with an adjoining room to become The ‘Edith’ - a king suite, on the top floor, with kitchen & sitting area. Something so dreamy about the light here.

This ledger contains meeting notes of the New Century Guild from 1882 - 1906. Resources such as this help us to uncover details of efforts made by the women of the Guild. Extremely grateful to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania - an organization which ensures historic documents like these (and many, many more) are well preserved!

At its height, the New Century Guild library housed over 4000 books and had a full-time librarian on staff. Resources were available to all members - many of whom donated books to build the collection. Other books were procured by the Guild, using a modest monthly budget. This space will be converted into a show-stopping junior suite, named in honor of the Guild’s founder, Eliza (Turner). In the spirit of continuing the theme of sharing resources, Guild House will have a small library in our lounge, on the 1st floor. Some of the books within are historic; gifted to us from the original Guild library. We'll also be sharing some great reads in a virtual library, on Instagram.

With the property having been built in 1851, Guild House Hotel has an abundance of fireplaces throughout. They make for a wonderful focal point in the majority of our rooms/suites. Each unique, some are elaborately ornamental, while others have a more simple elegance. . Side note: the wall paper in this room was hand painted. While it was far too damaged to salvage in its entirety, we’ve kept a small portion to frame.

On August 18, 1920, Tennessee narrowly approved the 19th Amendment, with 50 of 99 members voting yes. This provided the final ratification necessary to add the amendment to the Constitution. Next week, on August 26th, we will commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment. Please join us in toasting the women who fought & won the vote. Learn more about the celebration from Vision 2020's Women 100 ! While certainly a significant milestone, many were... still unable to exercise a right to vote - including Black, Mexican-American, Native American, Chinese-American and Korean-American women. Full voting rights were not achieved until as late as 1965. Pictured, the auditorium of the New Century Guild - between 1905-1923, this space was opened to gatherings of women advocating suffrage. It was a meeting place used by the first organized Suffrage group in Philadelphia.

2 years ago, on this day, our company acquired 1307 Locust Street. We knew it would be an interesting venture - like nothing we had done before - but never could we have predicted this wild ride! It is truly a, once in a lifetime, dream project. We are all incredibly excited to see it come to life!

In case you haven’t noticed, we are incredibly proud of our property’s history. The sign out front acts as a great reminder of the important work which took place inside our walls. Guild House will be a modern luxury hotel - a delicate balance, as we preserve architectural details and share stories of the Guild’s history, while creating a luxurious environment for guests to relax, unwind and be inspired.
