Hello Habitat Family! This week at for our "Working at Habitat Wednesday", we have our very own Joe Polizzotto! Joe is the Construction Manager here at Habitat Lehigh Valley. Joe tells us a little story about some of his fondest memories from Habitat. ----- So, my first day on the job at Habitat, the guy who was the Construction Director at the time took me up to the top of the mountain in South Bethlehem at 8 am, and dropped me off at a site where they were building a home.... I said, "What do you want me to do?" He said, "Watch the site, I'll be back at 3", and he left. I walked onto the site that had about 10 guys working on it, and a 6'6"guy walked up to me, looked down, and jokingly said," Just so you know, you are not really in charge of us." Welcome to Habitat! That was 9 years ago, and since then I have been the lead on about 40 homes in the Lehigh Valley. I have been on Habitat builds in Costa Rica, South Vietnam, and North Vietnam. I was invited to go on a build in South Africa this year, but COVID shut that down. My job here has been a perfect fit for me, I have 40 years of construction experience, and I also have a masters degree in physical education, all of which I use on site every day. Almost 10 years ago, when I sat in front of a 20 member board of directors, and was interviewed for my job, they asked me how I would handle working with volunteers, after being a private sector contractor for 30 years. I said then what I will say now, it is a privilege to work with anyone who gives up their time to come out and help us build homes. Outside of work I enjoy all things outdoors and physical. In summer I hike, fish, golf, and kayak. When the weather starts getting colder, I go deer hunting and skiing. I'm good enough at most of it to have fun, but not great at any of it; fun is always the main goal though! I turn 65 in a few months, and they have allowed me to cut back on my schedule and work 4 days per week, for which I am very grateful. This gives me more time to do other things that I like to do, but also gives me more rest. My wish is that I will stay healthy and strong enough to do this job, which I love, for many more years. --- We are thankful for everything you do, Joe! #StaffSpotlight #WorkingatHabitatWednesday
