A friend of ours was quarantined for Covid. Ann made a batch of the best chicken noodle soup on the planet to share with them. Here’s the recipe. http://smithshiddenacres.com/2020/02/13/chickensoup/ Reminder, just because the growing season is over chicken doesn’t have to be off the menu. We put some in the freezer. Contact us with questions.
Happy Thanksgiving! Our farm has been part many meals with so many more families this year. While it’s been a terrible year for many reasons we’re very thankful for your support. This was one of our customer’s turkey from a few years back. Post your bird pics in the comments. We love seeing how they turn out.
*****UPDATE NOW SOLD OUT WE HAVE 1 extra Turkey. Processed today and ready for your table Thursday. Contact us if you would like details. Could also drop in freezer for a Christmas dinner.
Vote for the food system you want with your food dollars. When you buy local meats you support an alternate system, not just our farm but the small processors we use as well.
What’s your fav side?
We are down to about 10 chickens remaining from our November batch. Most of this batch is reserved for chicken sausage (stay tuned for more about that) but we have about 10 left for customers who’d like to make sure their freezers are full of our fresh, pastured raised, locally mulled, gmo, pesticide, herbicide, antibiotic free chicken. Contact us for ordering details. **We also have FROZEN boneless skinless breasts, bone in leg/thigh quarters, wings and stock packs

See fox watching hen house... https://www.reuters.com//us-tyson-foods-beef-inspections-i
This is sad beyond words. We have no need to import beef, or really much other food. The actions we take to put food on our tables go far beyond our dinning rooms. Buy local farm products and you can change the world. Literally. https://www.pbs.org/video/cost-of-beef-1603226776/
We welcomed 2 new bovine to the herd yesterday. Libby and Penny. Libby is 9, Penny (Red) is 10 months and Libby is expecting in March.
UPDATE THANKSGIVING TURKEYS SOLD OUT!!! Our growing season is just about over. We have about 10 unreserved chickens from our early November batch and about FIVE!!! This is our brooder. It’s where chicks spend the first few weeks of their lives. It’s now empty. This means the growing season is coming to a close. If you’d like a fresh bird we’ll have a handful available in November. The rest of this batch are slated for another purpose. Stay tuned for more on that!
Turkeys got a bigger house last night. They’re enjoy the little bit of sun we have today.
Just a reminder Emma’s birthday was this week. Her birthday means that Thanksgiving is a little over 6 weeks away. At this point we’re almost down to single digits of turkeys remaining for order. Contact us today to secure the star of your holiday feast!
Not the best photo but the compost pile is where every processing day ends. All of the parts that aren’t used for human consumption feed the microbes here. Eventually this compost will make it back to the fields and feed other animals and by extension, humans. Nature recycles.
Want to stretch your food dollar? This pic is from ONE of our Stock packs. One gallon of soup and 1/2 gallon of bone broth. Total chicken cost-about $6.
Our last ‘big’ chicken batch will process October 6th. Now is the time to fill up those freezers for winter. In addition to whole chickens we also will have boneless skinless breasts, leg/thigh quarters wings and stock packs. Can’t wait till October 6? We’ve got some of the above in freezer. THANKSGIVING TURKEYS-ORDER TODAY LIMITED NUMBERS REMAIN!
Cheesy Beef and Vegetable Soup is what’s for lunch today! The broth for this soup is made from the bones of the chicken stock pack I used to make the chicken noodle soup over the weekend. I made a little over a GALLON of broth and bone broth from the one stock pack! Topped with sour cream, avocado, homemade purple sauerkraut and a few pickles.... What’s for YOUR lunch?
The weather is clear, and the air is a little cooler. Nothing says Fall like a big pot of fresh chicken noodle soup. Here, I’ve served up a hearty bowl with skillet cornbread and topped with grass fed butter. If you’d like a video on how I use our Stock packs to make this beautifully golden hued broth, comment down below and let us know!
Need a dinner idea tomorrow? This was delicious http://smithshiddenacres.com///maple-oven-roasted-chicken/
