Hallowood Institute

Our first seminar at Hallowood Institute in Philadelphia was held on Saturday, September 28. It was a joy to gather for this important discussion about Spiritual Bypass. In 2017, the Pew Research Center found that 71% of Americans identify as Christian. 79% of African Americans consider themselves Christian and 55% of the nations estimated 35.4 million Latino adults identify as Christian. 42% of Asian Americans categorize themselves as Christian. All this is to say that for ...psychotherapy practitioners today, many of our clients understand themselves to be Christian. We need to honor those identifications and shape how we relate to these clients accordingly. Some, of course, will not come to us seeking counsel related to their faith, but many will. And many more will come with questions about existential issues that relate back to their unconscious thoughts and feelings about God and the meaning of life and relationships within their families and social circles. To neglect any investigation of the impact of their spirituality on their emotional well-being is poor form. As we invite clients to disclose as much as they can about their relationships and their inner world, we will inevitably run into their thoughts and feelings about God. Being prepared to explore these core elements of our clients’ lives is vital. Gaining deeper empathy and more specific understanding of the role of spirituality and the likely experience of Spiritual Bypass (SB) in the lives of our clients is vital to their progress.
