Weekly WISDOM: Cavities, also known as caries, are holes that develop in our teeth when they are affected by substances like plaque, bacteria, acid, and sugar. You may be able to tell you have a cavity if you begin to notice a toothache, sensitivity, pain when you bite down or eat something sweet, hot, or cold. While cavities are common, they are also preventable! We can prevent cavities in our teeth by having good home care and attending our dental appointments regularl...y! Having a consistent routine for brushing, flossing, and rinsing our teeth is part of good home care. Filling our diet with tooth healthy foods can also be helpful! She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in biology, then became a licensed hygienist in 2010. Jamie loves getting to know her patients and providing them each with care. Weekly WISDOM: The mineral fluoride is an essential part of a tooth’s enamel. When we have influences like plaque, bacteria, acid, and sugar on our teeth, it starts to wear down the layer of enamel. Fluoride treatment helps to refill some of the minerals lost, and protect against the influences that cause tooth decay. Fluoride can be found in foods and water we consume, toothpastes, and some mouthwashes! Receiving a fluoride treatment in our office provides a higher amou...nt of fluoride than those listed above.
