On this day in 1943. the USAT Dorchester is struck by a German torpedo sinks in the north Atlantic Ocean. Onboard are four Army chaplains Methodist Church min...ister George L. Fox; Reform Rabbi Alexander D. Goode; Reformed Church in America minister Rev. Clark V. Poling and Roman Catholic priest Father John P. Washington who give up their own life jackets to others. They drown after helping dozens of soldiers onto life boats. Their final act is a prayer together, arms locked. Of the 904 onboard, 675 perish. The bravery of the four chaplains leads The American Legion to call for their Medal of Honor recognition. Dear American Legion Family, July 4th is Independence Day but it is today that really is the point of it all. #ElectionDay is our opportunity to select the lead...ers in this experiment of self-government. The American Legion will never tell you who to #vote for. We just ask that you research the issues and vote your conscience. It’s also a good opportunity to practice a Buddy Check by driving your fellow veterans to the polls. The bottom line is to vote. 37 years ago today, a suicide bomber struck the #BeirutBarracks for the 1st Battalion 8th Marines, killing 220 Marines, 18 sailors and 3 soldiers. The incident marked the largest single-day loss for the US military since the Vietnam War's Tet Offensive. #TheyCameInPeace
