At every step of the way, coal energy puts children’s health at risk. When it’s mined, coal releases thousands of tons of tiny particles that can lodge deep in a child's lungs, and like smog, can worsen asthma or other respiratory illnesses- like COVID-19. When coal is processed, burned, and disposed of, it releases cancer causing chemicals and heavy metals, such as mercury, that harm children's and unborn babies’ brains.
