Tipton The Man Behind the Camera - How He Influenced the Gettysburg Battlefield... Speaker: Randy Drais Most, if not all, Battle of Gettysburg buffs have heard about Gettysburg photographer William H. Tipton. Tipton studied photography as the apprentice of Charles and Isaac Tyson, who were among the earliest Gettysburg photographers, and he later went into business for himself, taking thousands of photographs of visitors to the Gettysburg battlefield, where he also established Tipton Park and was a major force behind the establishment of the Gettysburg Electric Railway’s trolley line on the battlefield. By 1888, Tipton had produced approximately 5,000 views of the Gettysburg battlefield (the vast majority of the collection was acquired by the Gettysburg National Military Park from C. Tyson Tipton in 1935) and more than 100,000 portraits. Join amateur historian Randy Drais as we learn not only about William H. Tipton’s many influences on Gettysburg, the battlefield, and the Gettysburg National Military Park, but also his family and their involvement as well, and see many of Tipton’s rarely seen battlefield photographs. The Hershey Civil War Roundtable will be hosting a Zoom Meeting on October 15, 2020 at 7:30 PM (See the invitation below) Hershey Civil War Roundtable October Meeting Topic: The Tragedy in Lawrenceville: The Allegheny Arsenal ... Explosion Speaker: Julianne Herman With the increasing interest in women’s roles during the Civil War, including the seemingly unlikely role of women working in a military arsenal and learning that various arsenal explosions, both north and south, involved the loss of life for both women and children. We will learn about the explosion at the Allegheny Arsenal. To this day, few are aware of this tragedy as totally overshowed in the news by the Battle of Antietam, which occurred the same day. A brief history of the Allegheny Arsenal and an accounting of the disastrous explosion there on September 17, 1862, accompanied by photos, we will a look at the Elusive Cause, Blame and Remembrance. Although Julianne worked for 45 years as a Registered Nurse in the operating room, she has long been drawn to the study of historical events, both nationally and worldwide. Her interest in the Civil War increased during the 125th Anniversary commemorations, and she began reenacting and studying various aspects of the war. As a civilian reenactor, she became increasingly interested in women’s roles during that time period, including the seemingly unlikely role of women working in a military arsenal. Learning that various arsenal explosions, both north and south, involved loss of life to both women and children, Julianne went on to learn about the explosion at the Allegheny Arsenal. To this day, few are aware of this tragedy as it was totally overshadowed in the news by the Battle of Antietam which occurred the same day. Now retired from nursing, Julianne is a member of the Central PA Civil War Round Table, where she serves as secretary, the Harrisburg CWRT, and is a board member of the PA Military Museum in Boalsburg. After a varied reenacting history, which includes the 7th Tennessee, The Confederate Signal Corps, the Confederate Navy, the 30th PA, and the Patriot Daughters of Lancaster, she now reenacts with the 148th PA Infantry Co. C. Her hobbies include world and national travel (62 countries and 49 states), photography, reading and swimming. The railroads here in York County, PA, were critical to the Union war effort, and the Northern Central Railway was the 3rd-most used railroad in the entire North for the military in the early years of the war.
